Wargame Map Tool: My first attempt to draw a map

Having recently downloaded the WARGAME MAP PROGRAM hex map drawing program, I have managed to start playing around with it. I decided that my starting point would be to produce the sort of map I used for the Operation Barbarossa Mini-campaign that I staged last year at my local game club, Dice on the Hill. It took me a couple of attempts to get it the way I wanted it to look, and the result looked like this:

It is by no means as detailed as I hoped it might be, but for a first attempt I was quite pleased with the result.

  1. A nice start and from what you showed before I expect as you learn more you will polish this up.
Are the dark green patches woods or hills?

    1. WEK 3,

I was pleased with my first effort … and it only took a few minutes to produce.

The dark green areas are supposed to be woods. It does have a forest icon but I have yet to work out how to scale it to fit a single hex.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hi Bob,

That is a fantastic first effort, especially considering it only took a few minutes to throw together! It captures the layout perfectly for a mini-campaign. Once you get those forest icons scaled, it’s going to look brilliant.

    1. Andrew Bruce (Andy),

Cheers! My next learning exercise will be to try to replicate the maps that I used for my Operation Barbarossa Mini-campaign in 2015. I’m going to see how quickly I can redraw those three maps. This should indicate how easy this program will be to use.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob
I don't know if I have mentioned it before, but have you tried Profantasy Campaign Cartographer? The title is a mouthful, but I have found it by far the best tool for map maping - and I have made a LOT of maps. I have used it for about ten years and never been tempted to try anything else. It is still available and costs £39.95. Really well worth the cost.
    regards
    Paul

    1. Thistlebarrow (Paul),

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a look at Profantasy Campaign Cartographer and it certainly looks very interesting. I am a bit put off by the price, but the graphics are first class and I could certainly find a use for it, especially at my local game club.

      All the best,

      Bob
