I've started work on the Third Portable Wargame Compendium

As I remain immobile and am not likely to be able to walk unaided for some time, I decided to begin the preliminary work on the next (and third) Portable Wargame Compendium.

I have several promises of articles and I have started writing one of my onw in which I look at some of the scenarios included in the earlier wargame books (e.g. The Battle of Hook's Farm) and 'convert' them so that thy can be used with the PORTABLE WARGAME rules.

So far I have drawn maps for three such scenarios:

  • The Battle of Hooks Farm from H G Well's LITTLE WARS.
  • The Action at Blasthof Bridge from Brigadier Peter Young and Lieutenant Colonel James Lawford's CHARGE! OR HOW TO PLAY WAR GAMES
  • The Battle of Sittangbad which is also from CHARGE! OR HOW TO PLAY WAR GAMES

Drawing the maps takes some time but it is keeping me entertained during my enforced immobility. I also plan to add the three battles from Donald Featherstone's WAR GAMES, giving a total of five scenarios and ten maps that readers might find useful, especially those who like well-tried and tested scenarios.

To whet the appetites of potential purchasers, here are the two maps I have drawn for THE BATTLE OF HOOK'S FARM.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Well, I'm sat here, I now have access to a laptop, and I've got plenty of time on my hands ... so I might as well use opportunity to be productive! I'm making slow progress, but I'm enjoying what I am doing.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Bob, I hope you are making progress with your recovery. I would like to contribute again if I may. It would encourage me to write up and develop my campaign/operational rules for 8x8 boards. Regards Paul.

I'm getting better ... but slower than I had hoped.

I'd be very pleased to accept and publish any contribution that you would like to make.

  4. Great news on the book Bob - I almost said “3PWC” but then realised that might elicit a negative response from a certain multinational company of accountants might. So, good luck with 3rd Portable Wargame Compendium. As usual, you can count me in for ordering a copy as soo as it’s available.
I trust the activity (working on the book) will also help keep your mind occupied whilst the healing process continues.
    Cheers,
    Geoff

I would have hoped that Price Waterhouse would have been pleased to be associated with the Compendium!

I am finding that being able to write is helping me to remain positive about things, and it certainly helps to fill my days, which would otherwise have ben spent watching mind-numbing daytime TV!

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Being a regular reader of Private Eye I would suspect that any/all of the major accountancy/audit firms would be highly delighted to be thought of in such positive terms as the Compendium 🤔🫣

    3. Bob -
I've sent an email in respect of another topic you might be willing to include in PWCIII - 'Byzantiad'. Over the last few months I have been looking to tidying up that project, with a slight redesign to slow things down a bit. Your thoughts?

I think that your Bizantiad campaign would be an excellent article for the forthcoming Compendium.

  5. Hooks farm! Crumbs! The originals are the best sources! Most of what I’ve played I bet stems from them … maybe even all I’ve played haha!

Working on things like the Compendium takes my mind off my current situation and fulfils my desire to feel productive in some way.

  7. A good start! Perhaps you would consider adding a 6th scenario? That way we could just roll a d6 for a quick, random game. Should you wish to include any of my random ramblings feel free to do so. I'm looking forward to seeing more teasers.

    1. Mark Cordone,

If I manage to add the three battles from Donald Featherstone's WAR GAMES I should have six scenarios and maps.

I will certainly be asking you to contribute to the forthcoming Compendium and will be in contact by email soon.

      All the best,

      Bob
