There’s a few book reviews in the offing …

Thanks to my current situation (i.e. being stuck in bed or in an orthopaedic chair all the time) I’ve been doing a lot of reading and my regular blog readers can expect to see quite a few book reviews appearing on my blog in the immediate future. I usually have two or three books on the go at any time (usually a fiction one and at least one non-fiction book) so that I don’t get bored with what I am reading. I don’t know if other people read like this, but over the years it’s become something that I regard as normal.

  1. I rarely read fiction these day Bob, but do tend to have a few non-fiction books on the go, so I can chop and change as time and interest allow.

    1. Steve J.,

I find that well-written fiction can be very addictive and as a result, I never have more than one fiction book on the go at the same time. The same does not hold true for non-fiction, and I sometimes might have three or more in various stages of being read.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. I used to. Pre-pandemic, I would have something I read on the bus travelling to work (usually non-fiction) and something heavier as bed-time reading.
Now as a homeworker, there's only the bed-time reading!

    1. Neil Patterson (Neil),

I used to always have a book (usually non-fiction) in the loo, but since I’ve had my colostomy, the opportunity to need one has disappeared!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I do that but some books I never finish. I also delve into old magazines where I read two page true life historical stories like from the old Parade magazines. Occasionally I find something I really like such as the Lost Regiment series and I read the whole series of 11 books back-to-back.

    1. Quantrilltoy,

It’s a rare book that I never finish … but Les Miserables nearly joined that small pile!

I also enjoy binge reading book series in the same way some people binge watch TV series, and I’m always on the lookout for new ones to read.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Only two? There's usually something electronic (an epub or PDF) to read as well as a physical book on the go, apart from the choice of fiction or non-fiction...

    1. Pompey Dave,

It’s usually two or three although at time it has been more than that. I do read a lot of fiction books on my Kindle although I find that non-fiction Kindle books are not always as good as their printed counterparts.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. I often have one fiction and one non-fiction book going, but often get through the fiction books quicker and just pick up the non-fiction one when I have a few minutes to spare or want to get into it more.

    1. Futz-Badger,

I also seem to read non-fiction books at a slower pace than I read fiction ones, but I have no idea why this should be the case,

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. I do the same thing. Currently re-reading Shogun, just finished Rome and Persia and am going to start Military history of Late Rome 284-361.

It sounds as if we are not unique in reading two books at the same time.

  7. BOB,
My guess is that your present situation does not allow for you to go ahead with the sale of your house- will you need to wait until you have made a full recovery? Best Wishes. KEV.

Our plans to sell up and move are definitely on hold for the foreseeable future. I certainly would not be able to cope until I am either 100% better or I have some idea as to what sort of new home I would need if I’m going to have permanent mobility problems.

      All the best,

      Bob
