One of the other clippings that I found whilst sorting through my files was the first magazine article that I wrote and was paid for! It was published in one of the early issues of MINIATURE WARGAMES, and was about one of my abiding interests, the Chaco War.
The paper was quite yellowed by age, which accounts for the poor quality of the scans ... but I think that they give you an idea of how the originals looked, and after reading the article I am of the opinion that was not too bad an attempt to interest other wargamers in this interesting and relatively unknown war.To read this article, please click on the images.
I actually remember this one!
ReplyDeleteRoss Mac,
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how much it pleases me to read that you own a copy of this article.
All the best,
Bob
Great article as always, Bob. Has enough to get me started--like I need another period...
ReplyDeleteI recently ran a YouTube search for things like the Chaco War, Russo-Turkish War of 1877, Balkan Wars, etc. There is a surprising amount of material there, generally posted by people in other countries; this means I can't understand the narration, of course, but the pictures/film clips are priceless!
Best regards,
Chris
A fascinating introduction to a war that I had previously never heard of!
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful 'little war' that would make an ideal small project for a wargamer ... so good luck!
You are right about the amount of non-English language stuff available on YouTube about the less well-known wars. Some of it is very inspirational.
All the best,
Bob
Archduke Piccolo,
ReplyDeleteThe Chaco War is quite fascinating, and one that is ideally suited to wargaming. It is also a great basis for a war between to small imagi-nations ... as Herge showed in his Tintin book THE BROKEN EAR. The book also provides lots of ideas/background for 'pulp fiction' adventures.
All the best,
Bob
I think most if not all of the aircraft listed in the article are now available in 1/144 from Shapeways.
ReplyDeleteNigel Drury,
ReplyDeleteAnother good reason to start a Chaco War project.
All the best,
Bob
This is really very good. If you don't have any objection I'll re-post the images on my blog (of course crediting you). If it's of any interest I released a range of 28mm figures for the Chaco War yesterday. See the link below:

The Wilde Goose,
ReplyDeletePlease feel free to re-publish the images, as long as you mention where they came from.
The figures sound interesting, although 28mm is a but bigger than I normally use.
All the best,
Bob
Thanks Bob. The article really is the best summary of the war I've seen to date. It's a good outline and introduction to the whole conflict. I decide to go the route of 28mm as it seems a good size for company sized actions i.e. it seems to work very well with late WW1 wargames with their mix of trench warfare and manoeuvre, which is similar to the tactics employed during the Chaco war.
ReplyDeleteRegards and Happy New Year,
Mark
The Wilde Goose (Mark),
ReplyDeleteI must admit that 28mm-scale figures are very attractive ... and if I ever decide to wargame the Chaco War in that scale, I shall certainly look long and hard at your range of figures!
All the best,
Bob
