A rose by any other name ...

I was looking at my recently assembled Meng model of HMS Hood ... and realised that with a little bit of tweaking (or squinting!) it might pass for other ships.

From the side, HMS Hood looked like this:

When compared with the side views of the Japanese battleship Nagato ...

... and Fast Battleship Kongo ...

... the designs of which were heavily influenced by contemporary British designs, the possibility of converting a Meng model of HMS Hood into cartoon versions of the Nagato or Kongo looks possible.

It is certainly something for me to think about.

I am not the only person who is thinging about the wargaming possibilities of models like this. Martin Evans has designed and 3D printed his own 'cartoon' versions of HMS Revenge and HMS Erin that look very interesting. His models are smaller than Meng's model of HMS Hood but show the potential of 3D printing and of this style of model.

  1. For wargames purposes it's pretty much a case of 'how many funnels', 'how many masts' and 'what is the main gun layout'.

    1. Rob Young,

That seems to have been Fred Jane’s approach … and what’s good enough for him is certainly good enough for me.

      All the best,

  2. Interesting you just need a tweak or two to get the Japanese pagoda tower structure and you are away!

    1. Geordie an Exiled FoG,

As far as I can see, the amount of conversion work needed would be minimal. The result would by no means be an exact (or even inexact) replica of the Nagato or Kongo, but it would certainly look Japanese ... which is all that I would require.

      All the best,

      Bob
