This is a truly comprehensive study of the ships of the French Navy during the period from 1859 to 1914, and as such it will no doubt prove to be the 'go to' book for anyone seeking information about that navy for many years to come. It is preceded by FRENCH WARSHIPS IN THE AGE OF SAIL 1662-1786 and FRENCH WARSHIPS IN THE AGE OF SAIL 1786-1861, and if the author plans to research and write a book covering the period from 1914 onwards, I will certainly be buying it!

FRENCH WARSHIPS IN THE AGE OF STEAM 1859-1914: DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, CAREERS AND FATES was written by Stephen S Roberts and published in 2021 by Seaforth Publishing (ISBN 978 1 5267 4533 0).

  1. Bob -
Sounds like a very handy resource for the war gamer into late 19th early 20th century naval war games. As it is my own interest has been recently revived by some fine scratchbuilt models that someone has posted in a group on naval war games. Apart from a couple of 'flatiron gunboats I've done diddly squat in that direction for a good while.

    Still have my sketches, though!
    Cheers,
    Ion

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

It might need some more plan drawings to be of greater use to wargamers who like to build their own ships but there’s lots of inspirational photographs.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Even just the photos can prove useful pointers. One can often find plans (of a sort) through the internet.

    3. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

I know what you mean. I often find photos much more inspiring than plans … which - as you say - can often be found online.

      All the best,

  2. Hello there Bob,

I must admit to having had my eye on this for a while! Back in the day I used to own a copy of the Ian Allan title on the French navy of WW1 that I used for my 1:3000 navy. This looks altogether a better proposition so you may well have tipped me over the edge!

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

It wasn’t cheap, but I think that it was well worth what I paid for it.

I also have that Ian Allan book … along with most of the others in the series.

      All the best,

      Bob

PS. Did you know that besides publishing books about transport etc., they publish books about Freemasonry.
