My good friend Tony Hawkins sent me a copy of SEALING THEIR FATE: 22 DAYS THAT DECIDED THE SECOND WORLD WAR for Christmas and I have been reading it since I got back from our recent cruise.
The book covers the period from Monday, November 17th to Monday, December 8th during which time the Japanese Navy sailed from Japan to Hawaii to mount their attack on Pearl Harbor, the German attempt to capture Moscow stuttered to a halt, and Operation Crusader took place in North Africa.
This day-by-day account looks at the war at several different levels. Not only does the author explain what decisions were being made at the highest levels but also how events were unfolding for individual participants. As such, it helps the reader to get some idea of just what it must have been like to have lived through that crucial period when things might have gone very differently.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and although there are no new revelations or insights, I came away with a better understanding of why these three weeks were so important to the eventual outcome of the war.
