Mea culpa! … I got the name of the battle wrong!

Toby E, who is one of my regular blog readers, has pointed out that I got the name of the exemplar battle wrong in my recent review of THE DOMINION OF OTTO VON BISMARCK, ...

... I identified the battle as the Battle of the Alma … but it was actually the Battle of Balaclava!

The Battle of the Alma ...
... and the Battle of Balaclava. Not easy to confuse ... except in the case of this writer!

Oops! As Captain Bertorelli (of ‘ALLO ‘ALLO! fame) would have said, ‘What a mistake-a to make-a!'

  1. Bob, I must admit that I was scratching my head a bit when I read Alma! As for the battle of Balaclava what a battle and advertisement for wargaming the Crimean War! It has it all - Russian infantry overrunning Turkish emplacements, Russian cavalry advancing and being held off by "the thin red line" of Highlanders, the British Heavy Cavalry Brigade charging Russian cavalry, and of course the Charge of the Light Brigade. What more does one want?

    1. Steve,

It was such an obvious mistake that I cannot understand how I made it!

Funnily enough, this morning I was watching a YouTube video about the ‘Thin Red Line’ at Balaclava and how the new Minie rifles had enhanced the British infantry’s firepower.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Strelets made a rather lovely typo on a box of Crimean figures which can be seen on the Plastic Soldier Review site (well I assume it was a typo??):

  3. BOB,
Great pictures of the Guards and Scots- If I do paint up two armies it will be for the CRIMEA using the excellent IRREGULAR 15mm figures. Regards. KEV.

    1. Kevin Robertson (Kev),

The uniforms worn during the Crimean War are a cross between those worn during the Napoleonic War and the American Civil War. The Irregular Miniature figures look great and I know that you’d make an excellent job of painting them.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. I must confess that for the Crimea, I just use my Napoleonic figures. In 6mm the uniforms look much the same....
