Developing the Portable Ironclads Wargame: The American Civil War

The latest addition to the PORTABLE WARGAME stable of rules - DEVELOPING THE PORTABLE IRONCLADS WARGAME: THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR - has been published.

It was written by David Crook (the creator of the A WARGAMING ODYSSEY blog) and edited by me. The book builds upon the rules contained in THE PORTABLE IRONCLADS WARGAME (published in December 2022) and contains several new ideas including a selection of optional rules covering key game mechanisms, the use of squares or single grid areas as well as a greatly expanded ship specification list and a full erratum. Although primarily aimed at the American Civil War, the rules may be successfully used for any naval conflict during the 1860s and 1870s.

The book contains the following chapters:

  • Contents
  • Foreword
  • Introduction
  • Acknowledgements
  • The First Rules of Wargaming and the Spirit of the Wargame
  • Thoughts on Initiative and Movement
  • More thoughts on Movement
  • Thoughts on Firing
  • More thoughts on Firing
  • The Use of a Square grid
  • The Use of Single Hexes or Squares
  • Further Notes on the Design and Thinking Out Loud
  • Final Thoughts, Further Thoughts, Errors and Omissions … Part 2
  • Battle report: Endgame Along the Missenhitti: The Battle of Static Bay: Part 1
  • Battle report: Endgame Along the Missenhitti: The Battle of Static Bay: Part 2
  • Calculating Ship Specifications
  • Expanded Ship Specifications for the American Civil War
  • An Illustrated guide to the warships of the American Civil War
  • Bibliography and sources of information
  • Revisiting the Rules
  • Thoughts on Quick Reference Sheets and Ship Specification Charts
  • Appendix 1: Quick Reference Sheets
It is worth noting that a copy of THE PORTABLE IRONCLADS WARGAME is required to use the material contained in this publication.

The book is on sale via Amazon in hardback (£25.00) and softback (£12.50) editions and in PDF format from Wargame Vault (£7.50). The latter is also available as part of a bundle with THE PORTABLE IRONCLADS WARGAME for £12.64 (and may even be discounted to a lower price!)

Tony Bath’s Ancient Wargaming: Including Setting up a Wargames Campaign and the Hyborian Campaign

There are some books that I think are an absolute ‘must haves’ for wargamers … and TONY BATH'S ANCIENT WARGAMING: INCLUDING SETTING UP A WARGAMES CAMPAIGN AND THE HYBORIA CAMPAIGN is one of them.

I owned a copy of the original SETTING UP A WARGAMES CAMPAIGN that was published by WRG (the Wargame Research Group) but somewhere along the line I lost it. (I think that I lent it to someone who failed to give it back, but that person is adamant that they did return it … so it could be anywhere.) I also had copies of some – but not all – of the records of the famous Hyboria campaign. This book brings both of these together in one volume, along with the text of Tony’s PELAST AND PILA Ancient Wargame Rules.

The campaign rules contains the following chapters:

  • Map movement
  • Contact, battles and after effects
  • Playing with umpires and without Supplies and replacements
  • Guidelines on running campaigns in other periods.

The campaign rules are worth the cost of the book, as is the record of the Hyboria Campaign (the LEGEND OF HYBORIA) … so anyone who buys a copy will certainly get their money’s worth.

TONY BATH'S ANCIENT WARGAMING: INCLUDING SETTING UP A WARGAMES CAMPAIGN AND THE HYBORIA CAMPAIGN has been edited by John Curry and published by the History of Wargaming Project and is available in Kindle, paperback, and hardback editions (ASIN B01N2HI27I, ISBN 979 8 4999 9076 6, and ISBN 979 8 3951 7552 6 respectively for £9.99, £16.95, and £21.95; I opted for the hardback!!).

Exactly what I want!

Earlier this week my old friend Nick Huband sent me a couple of documents that were extremely helpful.

One contained an article from the June 1976 issue of BATTLE magazine about 'Wargaming for Beginners'. It was written by Tony Bath and included several photographs of Joseph Morschauser wargaming on his gridded tabletop with 54mm and 25mm figures.

The second was a copy of an article from the August 2018 issue of MODEL BOATS magazine. The article described how Ashley Needham had constructed a model pre-dreadnought battleship based on the tinplate one manufactured between 1928 and 1981 by Sutcliffe Pressings Limited. It was named Valiant and is exactly the sort of model warship that I need for my Belle Époque project.

Now that I have a photograph on which to base my own models on, I hope to start work on building several as soon as I have completed work on my simple naval wargame rules and play testing Joseph Morschauser's FRONTIER wargame rules.

Little Wars … according to Paper Boys

Peter’s Paper Boys is Peter Dennis' paper soldier company, and it has rightly carved a niche for itself in wargaming. Besides being sold in book form by Helion, they are now available from the Paper Boys webpage.

One of the books is H G WELLS’ LITTLE WARS …

… and Peter has made it possible to download for free his illustration of a Wellsian wargame in progress.

As you can see, it captures the essence of Wells’ floor wargame, and as someone who - when I was more mobile - crawled about on a floor firing matchsticks at 54mm figures, it engenders all sorts of fond memories.

Please note that the illustrations shown above are © Peter Dennis.
