Polemos: The saga continues!

John Curry – of the History of Wargaming Project – has managed to get hold of a copy of the original POLEMOS rules ... and has kindly sent me a copy of the text.

I have been reading it for a few days, and I hope to give some feedback in due course. It does mean that it might be possible to recreate this 'missing' piece of early wargaming history, and if this is possible, I would like to give it a try.

This would be a diversion from my current plans ... but I think that it will be worth it.

  1. Hi Bob,

That is really good news and I shall look forward to reading further on the subject in due course. Does this mean JC will be publishing the same?

    All the best,

    DC

  2. Okay, Bob, what and when were the "original Polemos rules"?

I am guessing that you are not referring to those published by Peter Berry, but something earlier . . . however some of us don't have the background to know . . . so please fill us in as to their history, sir.

  3. Hi Jeff (and apologies Bob for beating you to the post!,

Bob has a label with some posts related to Polemos called, ahem, Polemos. There is some background there.

  7. Excellent news! The ILN article accompanying the engraving gives a tantalising glimpse of the game in play, but not enough information to deduce the rules.

  8. David Crook,

As far as I know, John Curry intends to include the text of POLEMOS (plus a few 'extras') in a forthcoming book about early wargames. I should imagine it will be available before Christmas this year.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Bluebear Jeff,

POLEMOS was a wargame devised during the latter part of the nineteenth century, and it was sold as a boxed set that contained pre-painted (and based) figures, a terrain cloth etc. It was demonstrated at RUSI (the Royal United Services Institute) and was quite popular in its day.

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. Chasseur,

John Curry has undertaken to publish the POLEMOS rules in a forthcoming book, and I hope to help him. Obviously this means that I will not be able to pre-empt what he does by publishing the text of the rules myself, but a more recent blog entry should give you some indications of how the rules work.

    All the best,

    Bob
