I may be thinking a lot ... but I haven't been idle

Since my last blog post, I have been doing a lot of thinking about my future wargaming. I have several ideas and possible strategies that I want to explore, but I have not come up with anything definite as yet.

Rather than sitting in my armchair pondering, I have been working on a couple of things. Firstly, I have continued renovating the Fallschirmjäger figures that I inherited from Eric Knowles' collection ... and they are looking good!

Secondly, I have been repainting the resin model of Tallinn's famous Viru Gate. The original model was painted silver(!) and red ...

... and I have repainted the stonework using a dark grey undercoat (Humbrol No.67) which I dry brushed with beige (Revell No.314). The roof tiles were repainted using carmine red (Revell No.36) and dry brushed with a 3:1 mixture of carmine red and beige. The results looked like this ...

... and I think it looks miles better.

  1. Your new building looks great Bob. A useful purchase.
I haven't got anything done hobby-wise due to an excess of work (can't complain really as it pays the bills!) - I have been watching a lot of Mike Potter's Budget Model Railway videos at lunchtimes, which have filled my head with ideas for my pile of OO gauge track!

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I thought that i didn’t do too bad a job of improving it!

Wait until you retire … and then you’ll find your days will be full of things to do … including wargaming!

Mike Potter - whose YouTube channel my wife calls ‘Bodge it Model Railways’ - is always good value, and I get lots of ideas from his videos, so I’m not surprised you’re getting 00 layout thoughts!

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,
You do find some wonderful buildings on your travels. In the past I have good fortune finding such items when buying dog food in pet shops. The ornaments for fish tanks can be surprisingly handy for wargaming - and they are very reasonably priced!

    1. Steve,

You’re right about fish tank ornaments being a great source of potential wargames buildings. I have two sections of decrepit castle walls that were such ornaments somewhere in storage and that need repainting so I can use them on my tabletop.

      All the best,

      Bob

Cheers! I have no idea why the original was painted silver, but someone obviously thought that would help sell them.

      All the best,

Cheers! I think that it will be useable for a variety of European settings, and I hope to add some more compatible buildings by Christmas.

Cheers! The repainting and dry brushing produced a very pleasing result, and the end result will look good in most Northern European settings. I only wish that I had bought several!

      All the best,

  7. Hi Bob,
Are you still doing the shiney napoleonics project? You were a big inspiration to me starting my own similar project back then. After a long break, I’m back on it with gusto!

    1. Glenn,

Unfortunately, my Napoleonic collection has been in storage for almost a year but I hope to retrieve it in the not too distant future. I may need to downsize it … but I will definitely be keeping some of it for future use.

It’s nice to read that you have returned to wargaming after your break, and I hope that your project flourishes.

      All the best,

      Bob
