I have been to … the Naval History Museum, Venice: A photo-essay – Part 1: The models of wooden ships

The Naval History Museum in Venice has a very large collection of ship models on display. Here are a selection from the models of wooden ships that form part of that collection. I have split the models into four sections:
  • Galleys
  • Sailing Ships
  • The Doge’s Barges
  • Ships of the World
Please note that all the models were in glass cases made from reflective glass, and this made photographing them difficult.

  1. Absolutely lovely! This is why I try to not refer to my Toy Boats as "models"!!

  2. Ross Mac,

These models are good ... but wait until you see the 20th century ones ... especially the Littorio-class!

I tend to use the terms 'toys' and 'models' interchangeably ... although 'toys' is probably more appropriate.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Hi Bob,

Now that is a sight for sore eyes and no mistake! Lovely stuff and a great scale for gaming in - 28mm galleys and ships of the line! I was particularly taken with the Korean Turtle ship.

    All the best,

  4. David Crook,

I must admit that seeing these models did make me wonder what it would be like to fight wargames with them.

    All the best,

    Bob
