An irresistible headline

I decided to try to find out what had been happening in the World whilst I had been feeling unwell by visiting the BBC News webpage. Amongst all the other stories, one particular headline caught my eye. It read:
Cardboard boats aid Nato war games off Scotland
I found this irresistible, and just had to read the story ... which turned out to be very interesting indeed.

Of equal interest to me was the photograph used to illustrate this news item as it showed a cloth terrain map (including cardboard model ships) of part of the Joint Warrior exercise area. The photograph was also featured on the Ministry of Defence website as its IMAGE OF THE DAY.

  1. As if any Wargamers would use cardboard models in a game - ridiculous. Cough, splutter.....

  3. Hi Bob,

....or even blocks of wood perish the thought....;-)

Mind you, the cardboard fleet looks more effective than the real one!

  4. I know times are hard but you'd think they could build something a bit more martial like. I don't know if it's just my eyesight but it looks as if the names of the ships are BUL and LUST!

  5. Anibal Invictus,

It brings a whole new meaning to the expression 'a paper fleet'.

At least they have made sure that the 'Lusty' has a ski slope to launch it's non-existent Harriers!

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. David Crook,

What sort of idiot would use wooden model ships when they can build them from cardboard?

    ME!!

I am feeling a bit better today. I am now at the sneezing and runny nose stage of my cold.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Brian Carrick,

At least they have painted them grey!

Your eyes are not laying tricks on you. BUL = Bulwark and LUST = Illustrious (AKA 'Lusty'); they represent 50% of the Royal Navy's heaviest units!

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Might have known that you would have got this in first Bob!

    I should have checked.

    Well done.

  9. You should contract out your fleet to the RN.

  10. Jim Duncan,

Pure luck on my part! But having seen it, I had to write a blog entry about it.

    All the best,

    Bob

  11. Pat G,

I could certainly provide them with some better quality models ... for the right price, of course.

    All the best,

    Bob

  12. Bob, make the models not your best and charge over the top for them. You're bound to get an order from them.

  14. Jim Duncan,

Sound advice. It sounds to me like you have experience of working for the government!

    All the best,

  15. Arthur,

I am preparing myself for the call to arms! It may come at any minute ...

As for the cold ... well it is no worse but not a lot better.

    All the best,

    Bob

  16. A modern day Kriegsspiel? I am assuming the lads are inside on a carrier elevator, hard to tell? Thanks for posting and get well ... Jeff

  17. Chasseur,

I think that it is a briefing rather than an actual kriegsspiel. As to the location ... well it looks very much like the elevator on Illustrious.

    All the best,

    Bob
