Its official ... cats like buttered toast!

As my wife and I were still not feeling much better this morning, we tried to have a bit of a lie-in ... but it was not to be. At 7.30am our female cat decided that it was time for breakfast, so she came and woke us up. Having fed her and our old male cat, I made tea for my wife and had a shower. I then made my wife some more tea, got dressed, and sat down at my computer and answered my emails.

At about 9.00am I decided that I fancied some toasted Hovis wholemeal bread for breakfast. I had just buttered my toast and taken it into the living room to eat when the doorbell rang. I put my toast onto the coffee table and answered the front door. It was my next door neighbour, who had come to thank me for sorting out a computer problem he had had. We talked for a couple of minutes, and then I went back to the living room to eat my toast ... to find my wife laughing her socks off and our old male cat just finishing licking all the butter off my toast!

I was not a happy chappy ... and I must admit that I might have used a few expletives that referred to the cat. The cat just sat there ... and to add insult to injury, it licked its mouth! By way of placating me, my wife made me some more toast ... but from now on I am not going to leave my toast anywhere where the cat can get at it.

  1. Yeah, cats have some funny tastes (ours prefers leftover toast crumbs.)

Btw, a cat post and no cat photo? Hmmmmmm.

  2. Vladdd309,

Our cats are usually very fussy, and like fish (no meat, except freshly cooked chicken) and fish-flavoured cat crunch/biscuits. They have never shown any interest in buttered toast ... before today.

I would have included a picture of the culprit ... but for some reason he is keeping well out of my way.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. I can't believe you own cats and are surprised at this :)

We have a cat that will eat just about anything she's offered, and will take anything she's not. her favourite at the moment is pavlova; she seems to have a bit of a sweet tooth. Our other cat, oddly enough, turns his nose up at anything other than dried cat biscuits.

Also, a second on the No Photo comment in the previous post.

  4. Kaptain Kobold,

My wife and I don't actually own the cats; they allow us to live in their house ... well that is what it feels like at times!

The female cat does not like other cats, and let's us know that fact at regular intervals. She came to us from a neighbour because she just could not get on with the other cats who live there. The male cat is an old stray who came in through the cat flap to eat ... and stayed.

I will certainly add a photograph of the 'criminal' if and when I can.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Cats love butter- I'm sad enough to do a little piece just for mine... my excuse is she's old and needs pampering....

    cheers,

    Pete.

  6. Pete,

My cats have never shown any inclination towards liking butter before today. Now that the male cat has, I shall need to be a bit wary next time I eat toast.

As to pampering my cats ... well we all do, don't we?

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. One of our dogs ate a whole bowl of sliced tomatoes. More understandable and considerably less pleasant was the one that drank a bowl full of liquid goose fat. He looked a little hung over the next day.

  8. Pat G,

Your dog ate tomatoes? I have never heard of anything like that before.

The goose fat, on the other hand, does make sense, although it sounds like the dog that drank it learned a lesson from the experience.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Our cat has a penchant for catching mice on the nearby allotment and eating them, too often I have risen in the morning to find a mouse' head at the foot of the bed - my own personal Godfather moment.

My wife says he brings mice in as a gift and leaves me the head as a delicacy, frankly I think you got off light with just a piece of buttered toast!

    Best wishes, Brian
    PS. cat picture now essential.

  10. Brian Carrick,

Our female cat sometimes catches small rodents and leaves their dead bodies (or bits thereof) for us in places where we will find them. I think that she is trying to show us that she earns her keep ... but she might just be trying to show us how stupid we are because we cannot catch mice like she can.

I have not yet tried eating one of them, although I understand that the Romans thought that edible dormice were a delicacy. I will stick to buttered toast … and I hope that cat will stick to rodents!

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. As requested, the latest blog entry includes a photograph of the hero/villain of my story.
