The run up to the New Year seems to have been very busy, and I have not yet had a chance to use my new playing card tiles in a wargame ... but I have had time to see what they look like on the tabletop when compared with the small playing cards I have previously used.
Small Playing Cards
Playing Card Tiles
It is apparent from the comparison that no only do the tiles have a smaller 'footprint' on the tabletop but that they are also easier to read at a glance. Furthermore they were easier to put down (and pick up) and will not require shuffling before each turn; just a quick shake of the bag at the end of each turn ... and then they will be ready to be picked out for the next one.

Looks like no argument to me!

I'm quite enjoying the look of those. I must look out for a set.
ReplyDeleteThey look great- could have done with them a few years back when we played Arc of Fire as it used a card moderated initiative system.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Pete.
The tiles are great!
ReplyDeleteGood idea! I've always balked at using playing cards in wargames, but the tiles might be a whole different gig.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I need to buy/make my own.
ReplyDeleteNice! That was a good find on your part.
ReplyDeleteI might have to look for something along those lines. Also, depending on the game/rules, one could make one's own custom tiles...
Just yesterday I bought some small wood blocks at the craft store thinking I could make my own custom dice, although I don't have any specific designs in mind at this point.
The tiles are much better. You might consider, merely because I would, painting or using a magic marker/felt tip/sharpie on the white border (not the numbers) of the tile. A light green or brown would help them blend even more.
ReplyDeleteUncanny! I just printed out Fatal Glory from an old "Nugget" and immediately saw the problem of large playing cards, small hexes, and 15mm figures, so I went to eBay and ordered playing card tiles on Monday. I planned to do the same thing: put them in a bag and draw them like chits.
ReplyDeleteI am just waiting for them to come in so I can get an AmRev game in.
Jim Duncan,
ReplyDeleteThe tiles DO look so much better, don't they?
All the best,
Bob
Tim Gow,
ReplyDeleteI would certainly suggest that you did ... especially if they are still in the sale!
All the best,
Bob
Pete,
ReplyDeleteIf you see a set, buy them! You never know when they might be useful.
All the best,
Bob
Francis Lee,
ReplyDeleteI certainly think so.
All the best,
Bob
Archduke Piccolo,
ReplyDeleteI think that the tiles are much better than even the smallest playing cards, and I have already had a few ideas about how to use them with my PORTABLE WARGAME rules.
All the best,
Bob
Sean,
ReplyDeleteIf you have the skill, then make your own. If not, then they might still be in the sale for the next week or so.
All the best,
Bob
Fitz-Badger,
ReplyDeleteIf you can get hold of the right-sized wooden blocks or something similar, there is no reason why you could not make your own tiles with your own designs on them.
All the best,
Bob
PS. I had wondered if the tiles from a Scrabble game might also have their uses. They are not too large and have assorted letters on them.
SAROE,
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good idea! I might well give it a go just to see what they look like.
All the best,
Bob
Dale,
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is called serendipitous coincidence!
Good luck with the rules, and I hope that you enjoy using them.
All the best,
Bob
