The Portable Seventeenth Century Wargame book: A short progress report

I have almost finished writing the first draft of the book's text, and I am now beginning to add some of the images. At present, I have just finished the first of several maps that Arthur Harman has provided to accompany one of the chapters he has written, and it looks like this:

Arthur supplied me with scans of his hand drawn maps, and I have been digitising them ... a process that takes time and quite a bit of concentration!

I am now about to start work on the second of Arthur's maps, which shows the initial positions of the various units as well as the course of the battle.

    1. Anthony Morton,

The map is for an interesting ECW reenactment game (Arthur Harman can always be relied on to come up with something different) but it will also serve as the basis for a scenario for a small battle.

Hopefully, I want to get the book finished by the end of November and published ASAP afterwards. It will be a nice Christmas present for you!

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. I was hoping for an appendix for playing Sealed Knot re-enactments. I participated in some of these when I was a kid. Combine Rugby with no rules, no ball and no sense, followed by copious and dangerous levels of alcohol consumption afterwards, with camping in the most uncomfortable conditions.

    3. Steve8,

Arthur’s rules are a lighthearted way to recreate those sorts of encounters ... and are full of ‘period’ features!

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. PDL (Paul),

I’m glad that this blog post helped to lighten your day!

The choice of names is down to Arthur Harman, and he has made sure that they include loads of wargaming ‘in’ jokes.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Tradgardmastare,

I think that a wargame about reenactors might be a bit of a first!

I’m hoping to get a lot done over the weekend. I’ll then send the draft of to be checked ... and once that has happened, I can proceed to the book’s publishing stage.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Steve8,

Farmer Hook and his family have tended to the needs of wargamers for over one hundred years, and are used to their land being constantly fought over!

      All the best,

  6. Brilliant Map! I love the familiar names.
Looking forward to treating myself to a copy of the book. Unfortunately, the painting of my ECW figures is progressing at a geological rate; the publication of this volume may encourage me to get a move on (or I may have to buy some of those pre-painted Perspex figures!)

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

It took quite some time to digitalise Arthur’s map, but it was worth all the effort.

The advent of the WoFun plexiglass figures might encourage me to actually put together a small collection of ECW figures ... and I hope to feature some of them in the book.

      All the best,

      Bob

I was very pleased with the way this map (and the one that shows the initial starting positions of the reenactors) turned out.

The Battle for Hook’s Farm is a great scenario, and one that I’ve used quite a few times myself.

      All the best,

Cheers! I’ve been working on the book since early this morning, and after lunch I hope to carry on. With luck, I should have the text finished by Monday ... and then it can go off for proofreading!

      All the best,
