I very deliberately didn’t take anything to do with wargaming on our recent cruise to give myself time to think about where I want to go next. As a result, I have made some decisions about what goals or targets I want to set myself over the next year or so. These are:
- To continue to develop the PORTABLE WARGAME concept. I hope to add some more period specific books to my range of publications and to encourage others to collaborate with me in doing this.
- To continue to create additional FUNNY LITTLE WARS/PORTABLE WARGAME armies to the three I already have. I have really enjoyed this slow-burn project and can see loads of long-term potential in this project.
- To develop the necessary imagi-nations (and their backstories) to go with the FUNNY LITTLE WARS/PORTABLE WARGAME armies I have and might create.
- To hand over some of the work I do for Wargame Developments to other, younger people. This is something that was already in train because of my hospitalisation last year, but I really do need to accelerate the handover process.
- To downsize my current Napoleonic collection by selling off some of my surplus unvarnished and unbased figures.
The above should keep me busy over the next year or so ... but no doubt my plans will be revised as 2021 becomes 2022, and as 2022 progresses.
It always helps to take a break in order to get a bit of perspective on things. All the best with your recalibrated course of action!
ReplyDeleteDonjondo,
DeleteI think that it is important to review one’s goals and targets every so often … and spending a short time away from the hobby certainly helps to clarify one’s thinking,
All the best,
Bob
Bob, that looks like a good set of plans, especially point 1, creating PW rules/books for additional periods, and point 4, because you surely deserve a rest after all that you've done for WD over the years and it will take time for someone else to 'learn the ropes'.
ReplyDeleteBut selling off Napoleonic figures? Shame on you!
Best wishes, Arthur
Arthur1815 (Arthur),
DeleteI am already in discussions with someone regarding a possible ACW naval wargame book … and my health ‘scare’ last year made me realise that it was about time to pass the WD baton on to someone else.
I’m keeping my existing collection on Napoleonic figures, but some time ago I acquired a collection which is not compatible with them, and it is those figures I am planning to get rid of … so it is not all bad news!
All the best,
Bob
Its often good to have a pkan to deviate from.
ReplyDeleteRoss Mac,
DeleteDeviate from a plan? That never, ever happens … does it?!
(I’ll be surprised if my plans haven’t changed a bit by the end of January!)
All the best,
Bob
Bob - It sounds as though your recent cruise helped clear and focus the mind to develop a plan of operations interesting and realisable. Even if you deviate from it, it is likely to be in a good cause...
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Ion
Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteThe cruise was very relaxing and an ideal opportunity to get my ducks in a row. I now have a plan ... and that is always a good starting point.
All the best,
Bob
BOB,
ReplyDeleteIt is good to re-set the program of projects and decide where to go during the next twelve months or so- certainly the cruise would help clear the mind making way for a fresh approach. Stay well there in London. Cheers. KEV.
Kev Robertson (Kev),
DeleteA clear mind, a clear desk, and a clear wargame table is the best start I can hope for. So far I’ve achieved the first …
Stay safe and stay well,
Bob
Most interesting to hear your plans. More books to look forward to reading! An excellent plan re WD, let someone else have the joy of organising etc. A fine innings you have played there!
ReplyDeleteTradgardmastare,
DeleteI like a plan … even if I don’t stick to it!
I’ve been doing most of the admin for WD since 1980 … so I’ve actually been ‘working’ for WD longer than I did in the world of education. It’s about time I ‘retired’!
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob
ReplyDeleteInteresting to read your revised commitments. I suspect that you will miss your current work with WD. Some years ago I ran a PBEM wargame campaign. It was a lot of, often thankless, work and eventually I just called an end. I am not sorry that I did so, but I do miss the often unappreciated advantages.
I will follow the proposed sale of your unwanted wargame figures with interest. As you know I am currently trying to find a new home for my 18mm AB figures. I have had to put that project on hold due to family problems, but hope to get back to it soon. I have always sold off unwanted figures in the past, but usually to replace them with newer and better ones. This is the first time I have done it to concentrate on only one scale. But it does seem a shame to have them just sitting on the shelf gathering dust, when they could go to someone who will enjoy playing with them.
regards
Paul
Thistlebarrow (Paul),
DeleteI will certainly miss some of the tasks I currently ‘do’ for WD, but I hope to remain involved in the production of THE NUGGET.
I would like to pass on the figures I am getting rid of to someone who will use them, and I am willing to let them go for almost nothing rather than let them sit unused in storage. I know that doesn’t make commercial sense but I’m not intent on getting rid of them to make money.
All the best,
Bob
