Might it be possible to meld ShamBattle with the Portable Wargame?: Part 2: Converting the map into a hexed battlefield

My starting point was to download a copy of the original map/battlefield used in the General's game in SHAMBATTLE.

I then overlaid this with a red 6 x 8 hexed grid ... which is the size of grid I've used in many of my previous mini-campaigns. The results looked like this:

I then 'converted' this so that the main terrain elements would fit on a 6 x 8 hexed grid.

Whilst this is by no means perfect, it gives me a starting point to work from, and my next step wll be to turn my map into a proper hexed terrain.

  1. The coloured hex map looks great Bob - will you be using Brigade sized units?

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I’m not sure how big the units will be, but they will probably be battalion-equivalents that are grouped together into brigades/divisions.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Steve J.,

Cheers! Wait until you see the actual tabletop … which should be tomorrow.

    1. Arthur1815 (Arthur),

I’m very pleased with the way it turned out … and the actual tabletop is even better than I hope it would be.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. At the Projects and Procrastination blog, the blogger used the ShamBattle map as a campaign map and used it to set up individual battles. For the battles themselves, he used your Portable Wargame rules to fight out the battles. I look forward to see how your game will play out.

    1. Jhnptrqn,

I remember seeing the posts you refer to, and I suspect that they may well have subconsciously influenced my decision to take on this project. In my case, the battles will be fought out on the terrain I have set up, and this can be regarded as a sort of prototype for a forthcoming project that I am planning.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Nice variation of the old map Bob. This is going to be interesting. Will you be using classic style toy soldiers? Thank you

    1. Glory to Ruritania,

I created a sort of demilitarised zone along the river in order to avoid the fighting starting straightaway.

For my initial ShamBattle war I will be using figures from my gloss-painted 15mm Belle Époque collection.

      All the best,

      Bob
