On Wednesday, Sue and I paid a visit to Eltham Palace. After a very enjoyable walk around the palace grounds, we stopped off in the shop. Sue saw that they were selling copies of RISK, THE BATTLE FOR MEDIEVAL ENGLAND.
This game was exclusively made for English Heritage and is only available from them, and as it was a ‘Member’s Day’ and everything was 20% off, she bought me a copy.
The game contains the following components:
- A gameboard which is divided up into five regions (North, Midlands, East Anglia, Southeast, and Southwest), each of which is made up on a number of territories that are named after English Heritage properties).
- Five armies of small plastic figures (red, blue, yellow, black, and green) that are comprised of infantry, cavalry, and siege catapults.
- Five D6 dice (three black and two red).
- A pack of forty-two Territory Cards, ten Mission Cards, and nine Power Cards.
It looks as if the game will be an interesting version of RISK to play ... and I can see myself using the figures for a Medieval version of the PORTABLE WARGAME and the gameboard for a campaign.
This is new to me Bob. Loads of gaming value for Campaigns with the PW or DotS. An excellent find!
ReplyDeleteMaudlin Jack Tar,
DeleteIt has lots of potential uses … and because it was bought during a ‘member’s week’, it only cost £20.00. The usual price is £25.00.
All the best,
Bob
Bob -
ReplyDeleteSerendipity - ain't it a blast?!
Cheers,

Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteIt is, isn’t it!
All the best,
Bob
I misread the title of the blog and assumed that EH had messed up on an at risk battlefield again! BTW This year is the 30th anniversary of the Historic England's Battlefields Register. Keep an eye out for events on battlefields near you in the week 13th September - 20th September.
ReplyDeleteTrebian,
DeleteFor once, this wasn’t a SNAFU by them!
I think that the nearest battlefields to where I live are Crayford (the scene of the battle between Hengist and Vortimer in 457) and Blackheath during the Cornish Rebellion of 1497.
All the best,
Bob
That looks very interesting, unfortunately it doesn't appear to be available in the states. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the game pieces, I wonder if they are the same as the ones for Risk Europe?
ReplyDeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteI suspect that it is only on sale at English Heritage sites and their UK website.
The pieces are different from those in RISK EUROPE. (I have a copy of the latter game.)
All the best,
Bob
I'd be interested in reading about what sets this one apart from other Risk! sets.
ReplyDeleteMaybe an AI summary of the rules?
Mr. Pavone,
DeleteThe rules are somewhat similar to those in the RISK game and are suitable for two to five players, although I think that it would be most enjoyable if all five factions were represented by a player rather than being a non-player whose armies can be 'taken over' by one of the players during the course of a game.
All the best,
Bob
BOB,
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the small figures that are included in the game. Would the figures be by Airfix? All the best. KEV.
Kev Robertson (Kev),
DeleteThe figures are about 10 to 12mm high and are very basic. The infantry are swordsmen in partial armour (I think it is supposed to be chainmail) and are wearing brimmed helmets that are not that different from the British World War I and II infantry helmet. The cavalry seem to be in full armour with some sort of pot helmet, and are carrying a sword and shield.
All the best,
Bob
