I don't have to go to work tomorrow!

It is Sunday evening, and my wife has just been getting her work bag ready ... and it has just hit me that although tomorrow is the first Monday in September (the traditional first day of the new school year in England), I am not going to have to go to work!

I knew that this day was going to come, but somehow I had not realised how different I was going to feel when it did. I have not been sleeping too well for the past few days, but this has been due to my summer cold and not the growing mixture of anticipation and anxiety at what the new term would bring that I felt in previous years. I am now retired from full-time teaching, and have the rest of my life to look forward to. I have plenty of things to occupy my time with ... but I have yet to fully accept that. I suspect that the next few days are going to be a bit of a learning curve for me ... and that I am going to find out that life after work can be as fulfilling and interesting as it was when I was a full-time worker.

Prorsum et sursum! (This is my old college motto, and it means Onwards and upwards!)

  1. Lots of gaming tasks await, sir. Are your paintbrushes at the ready?

  2. Bob,

Another thing to do is to read the following blog report (he used your Portable Wargame 2 rules):

I am sure you will enjoy it. Just don't feel guilty that the wife is still working, this kind of stuff happens.

    And relax.

    Regards

  6. Bluebear Jeff,

One of the 'tasks' I have set myself to do this week is to make sure that I have everything that I need to do some painting. It is a long time since I did any, and I am quite looking forward to it.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Don M,

I suppose that as from today it will be my non-Labour Day everyday!

    All the best,

  8. Arthur,

My wife has already given me a list of 'things to do' so I am not going to have a lot of time to feel guilty about not going to work. In addition, my wife is not a 'morning person' so I am still going to have to get up to make her breakfast ... so no 'lie ins' for me!

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. I have found a nice cafe nearby that does a very good cooked breakfast, and I hope to treat myself once in a while. I will make no comment about the waitress though!

  9. Tradgardmastare,

I shall be thinking of you as well. I know just how 'interesting' a new school year can be, and how it has the ability to quickly use up the reserves of energy and enthusiasm you have managed to build up during the short summer break.

    Good luck to you.

    All the best,

    Bob

  10. Bluebear Jeff,

Thanks very much for bringing this battle report to my attention.

This is exactly the sort of small battle that I envisaged PW2 being used to fight, and Fitz-Badger seems to have had an interesting time using them.

    All the best,

    Bob

  11. My brother-in-law who retired about 3 years ago told me recently that he was so busy now that he could not understand how he had time to go to work in the past . Things expand to take up vacant space . Good luck and enjoy !. Tony

  12. Mosstrooper,

I am discovering the fact that being retired does not mean being idle!

Already today I have sorted out my personal accounts, been to the bank to sort out my mortgage, and written a very long and detailed letter to the local council yet again complaining about the balcony that my next door neighbour built on his house four years ago in contravention of the planning permission he was given. They have been 'dealing with the planning violation' for over three years ... but have so far done nothing about it. Today's letter was a final ultimatum; either do something or I take the matter up with my local councillor.

(I have not done this before because I happen to know the local councillor very well – I taught her son and daughter as well as worked with her on several projects – and I did not want to look as if I was 'pulling strings' to get something done.)

    Onwards and upwards!

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. Enjoy your well deserved retirement Bob but try not to look too smug as you wave your wife off in the mornings. Be interesting to see if you miss it at all in a few weeks time.
    All the best.

  14. Jfidz,

I must admit that I kept well out of my wife's way this morning just in case she caught me with a grin on my face!

I don't know if I will miss it, especially as my wife has already found me a part-time job to apply for ... working in a school as an examination invigilator.

Not teaching and not well paid ... but it will get me out of the house and earning some pocket money (or so I am told).

    All the best,

    Bob
