Nice terrain boards ... are now stored somewhere accessible!

Almost as soon as I had written my last blog entry I realised two things. Firstly, that the squares on the MDF terrain boards are not 5cm x 5cm squares; they are 7.5cm x 7.5cm squares. This means that each terrain board has a grid that is 12 squares x 8 squares, and when used together the boards have a grid that is 16 squares x 12 squares or 24 squares x 8 squares. They can even be laid out in the form of a ‘T’ or an ‘L’, which gives even more flexibility.

Secondly – and probably more importantly – I realised that by moving my wargames table two inches in one direction, I could create room for the boards to be rested against one end of the table, thus making them very accessible.

Problem solved … and I hope to use the terrain boards in the very near future.

  1. Hi

It's true, we sometimes move forward,or sideways even, by inches.

Also, every inch counts.. yes well.

    Enjoy your day

  2. Bravo! What's the old saying? Every problem is an opportunity in disguise?"

Those are very nice looking boards btw. Are there matching hills squirreled away? With a series of flocked 7.5cm squares you could easily build up a contoured field of battle.

  3. Bob ,
I'm chuckling a bit as every time I read of a new discovery in your wargames/toy room I'm reminded of the tardis in Dr. Who.
Your descriptions paint a picture of a small room, but once you start to look around inside there are things all over the place.
Those boards are very nicely done and deserve to be used often. happy gaming.

  4. Arthur,

As you say, every inch counts!

  5. Ross Mac,

This was a very serendipitous find ... but it has thrown up a few problems as I now have three different terrain systems I can use for my wargames; Heroscape and Hexon II hexes and my own square gridded board! Which one should I use? The answer will probably be all three!

I have not yet found any hills to go with the boards, but it should not be too much of a problem to make some.

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. Brigadier Dundas,

The room is not that large (it is 12 feet x 10 feet) and has storage on both the long sides of the room and across one short side. In the centre are two tables. Each table has a folding top that, when opened up, makes a total playing surface of 6 feet x 4 feet.

Every single bit of storage space is used (including underneath the tables) and, as my blog entries indicate, I keep finding ‘new’ stuff every time I do a bit more searching. I suppose it is a bit like the TARDIS, but the space inside is not infinite … and that is one of the reasons why I am conducting my current series of ‘searches’.

The recently rediscovered terrain boards are definitely going to get some usage in the very near future. I may need to make a couple of hills first, but other than that they are ready for use.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Bob,

Has it been your experience that the boards are necessary to reinforce the MDF? (I THINK that's the same as hardboard over here--smooth on one side, criss-crossed on the other.) They would certainly be lighter and easier to store if they consisted of just the board itself, but if they tend to warp, I can see the need to line the edges underneath with 1x2, or whatever.

    Best regards,

    Chris

  8. Chris,

MDF is similar to hardboard, but is smooth on both sides. It is supposed not to warp, but as it absorbs moisture, paint (and white glue) can cause warping.

I added the frame to my boards because the last time I painted MDF it warped quite badly over a couple of months and the board became unusable.

    All the best,

    Bob
