Under the weather

My wife and I had nothing planned for today ... which is just as well as both of us woke up with summer colds. It is one of those irritating colds that leave you with a runny nose, a headache, and feeling generally lethargic.

I did manage to do a bit of work on my imagi-world map and to process a number of COW2012 bookings, but the planned play-test of the latest draft of my PORTABLE WARGAME 2 rules did not take place as I just did not feel up to it. Hopefully I will feel a bit better tomorrow, and that I will be able to run the play-test. If I do, I will write a suitably detailed and illustrated blog entry.

  1. Bob,

I hope both of you will be feeling much better tomorrow. But, if not, take it easy and try to rest.

  3. Get well soon!

I've been playing around with (unoriginal) ideas about simple rules and was thinking about effects and unit-based armies (as opposed to single figures). I'm sure I'm not covering new ground for many people. But I was thinking, in addition to an entire stand getting destroyed what are other ways combat (melee, small arms fire, artillery, etc.) could affect a single stand without requiring keeping track of casualties (or even status)? Things like: Push back, where the affected unit is forced to fall back a certain amount; routed, where the unit has to run away for a turn, but may then have a chance to rally; pinned, where the unit can't move on their next move but can still fire. Of course, lots of complications can be thrown in "to taste". Just some thoughts that have started floating around in my head.

With the long weekend coming up I want to get some gaming in. Maybe even a tryout of your 1 page PW2 rules for fun.

(and the word verification for this comment is... "trite". Well fair criticism I suppose :-)

  6. Bob,

Wasn't it Featherstone who recommended moving Knights around amongst the sheets and blankets when down with a cold?

Personally I've never done it, but the idea certainly has an honorable pedigree!

  7. Thanks to everyone who has sent best wishes for our swift recovery.

At the moment I seem to be unable to concentrate for more than a couple of minutes on anything, and my hearing – which is not too good anyway – seems to be almost not existent due to raging – and painful – sinusitis.

With a bit of luck we should both start to feel better tomorrow. In the meantime we are sitting indoors, keeping warm, and drinking lots of fluids.

    All the best,

    Bob
