Five months on ... and I am finished ... for the time being!

Despite various distractions and diversions, I have finally finished sorting out my toy/wargames room ... for the foreseeable future.

It now looks like this:

The bookshelves/cupboards are from a now-defunct IKEA range of furniture called Husar. All the storage draw units and wooden storage boxes are also from IKEA, and the plastic storage crates are all from Really Useful Boxes. The wooden crates were bought in various DIY stores such as Homebase and Great Mills.

One of the reasons why I decided to have this grand sort-out was to make my Hexon II terrain more accessible. Well now it is! One of the cupboards now houses all the hexed terrain tiles, and in the narrow shelf space between the top and bottom sets of terrain are the trays of trees I have based to use with my Hexon terrain. (The boxes of clips that hold the terrain tiles together are also stored on this shelf.)

In the gaps above this cupboard are two draw units and a wooden storage box. The former hold my Hexon small hills, roads, and stream/narrow river terrain sets and the storage box contains my Hexon trench and fortification sets.

On top of the cupboard are several Really Useful Boxes. These contain my Hexon large hills and mountains as well as my Hexon river terrain sets and several miscellaneous Hexon items that are too large to fit into the other storage I have used.

On the very top are the largest Hexon terrain items, including an eight-hex river section and two large slopes. These are just too large for any of the storage boxes or draw units I have used, and are therefore kept in plastic bags.

  2. Lead Legion,

Thanks for your kind words. The toy/ wargames room was a 'treat' to myself when I retired in 2001, although it took a couple of years to get the loft conversion done, the room decorated, and the furniture built and installed.

Having the draw storage units means that eventually I will be able to organise my wargames armies to make then as accessible as my Hexon II terrain is now.

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Peter Douglas,

Don't be; It is the result of quite a lot of blood and sweat ... and a few untried tears!

    All the best,

  6. Arquinsiel,

At times this week it looked more like a nightmare ... but now it is done, I can begin to move forward with at least one project that has been waiting on the back burner for the last couple of weeks.

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Mosstrooper,

I knew that it needed to be done, but just could not face doing it ... but once I had bitten the bullet and started, I was pleased that I had.

Send me your address, order the skip, and I shall be over to show you how it is done. (I won't be coming around, by the way; I am only joking!)

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. It looks terrific and very classy too. The Ikea stuff will make your war games room most elegant. You'll have to have us all over for a war games room warming party. :)

    Cheers,
    Mike

  9. Mad Padre (Mike),

Whilst I would love to entertain you all in these most elegant surroundings, the room is not very big, and - knowing the size of most wargamers - I would only be able to entertain you two or three at a time!

    All the best,

    Bob

  10. Hi Bob,

That is a lot of Ikea and a lot of Hexon!

It looks really well organised and there are few better pleasures to be had then completing such a reorganisation.

    All the best,

    DC

  11. David Crook,

You are right on all counts! I own a lot of products from IKEA and Hexon ... and will probably buy more in the fullness of time.

I also got a lot of satisfaction from completing the sort-out, especially as I can now access things like my Hexon terrain much easier than I previously could.

    All the best,

    Bob

  12. Very nice, Bob! I like the IKEA storage units you have there, and Really Useful Boxes sounds about right. :)

  13. Fitz-Badger,

Thanks for you kind comment. About half the IKEA storage draws were ready assembled and the other half were self-assembly ... and involved a degree of bad language and hit thumbs!

Over the past few years I have bought quite a few Really Useful Boxes and they are the best plastic storage box system I have used.

    All the best,

    Bob

I suppose that I just have too much time on my hands!

  16. You're pretty organized. Just by looking at the pictures, I'm really inspired to do it on my own home. I love the way you keep your plastic storage boxes at the top. It's cool

  17. Rory Fugerson,

It has taken me years to realise that unless I could find things when I needed them, it was rather pointless having them. By having as neat and tidy a storage system as I can helps to to keep track of what I have and where it is.

    All the best,

    Bob
