During our recent visit to Walmer Castle we saw members of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot re-enactment group both in camp and conducting a display.
In Camp The re-enactors had a very authentic-looking camp with a soldier guarding the Regimental Colours, ...
... an extensive encampment for the rank-and-file, ...
... and separate, better-quality tents for the officers!
The Display The Colonel ...
... put the regiment through its paces, beginning with a parade into the display area.
The regiment then demonstrated their arms drill ...
... before marching forward ...
... to demonstrate how a musket was loaded and fired, and what a musket volleys sounded like.
The display ended with the regiment forming up ...
... and charging the crowd!
There may not have been many of them, but the 44th Regiment of Foot re-enactors certainly put on a good show.

A brutal and licentious soldiery to be sure.
ReplyDeleteI confess to being deeply envious of the Colonel's hat....
ReplyDeleteThey may be small in numbers but they manage to 'fill out' the ranks - must be on some cushy garrison posting - I fear if I joined their ranks I would fit in very well!
ReplyDeleteThey are, of course, a properly scaled wargames regiment. Their anatomical proportions are way off-kilter however, with tiny heads, hands and feet, impossibly slender muskets, and wide variation in figure heights.
ReplyDeleteRegards, Chris.
Conrad Kinch,
ReplyDeleteTrue ... but only at weekends!
All the best,
Bob
Tim Goe,
ReplyDeleteAs the old saying states 'if you want to get ahead, get a hat'. This chap got the best hat ... and became the colonel!
All the best,
Bob
Stryker,
ReplyDeleteI suspect that this regiment's frontage might not conform to Bruce Quarrie's Napoleonic war games rules ... and would not be improved by my presence in the ranks either!
All the best,
Bob
Chris Kemp,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! The manufacturer should be shot for turning out such shoddy figures.
All the best,
Bob
