Other people's Portable Wargame battle reports: World War II Eastern Front

I woke up on Monday morning suffering from the early stages of a cold and feeling rather sorry for myself. I scanned down the list of blogs that I follow and that had recently been updated with a new blog entry ... and saw that Archduke Piccolo had written a long and lavishly illustrated PORTABLE WARGAME battle report. I read it ... and then re-read it ... and it lifted my somewhat lagging spirit.

The action is set on the Eastern Front and I found it thoroughly enthralling. The following photographs give a flavour of the battle report.

  1. Hi Bob,

It certainly made for a very entertaining read. I will be interested to hear your thoughts on some of the rules points raised during the action.

It was a visually very attractive game as well.

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

I think that Archduke Piccolo pointed out some interesting issues, but found a working solution within the framework of the rules that suited his circumstances. I think that if I had been faced with the situation, I would have come up with a similar method to solve it.

It's a pity that his poor health is going to put a temporary block on further blog entries, but one hopes that Archduke Piccolo will be treated quickly and will be blogging again soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. I was at the game store today and noticed a board game called Santorini, which contains some small square footprint plastic buildings. I don't know how big the buildings are, but they looked like they could be used for Portable Wargames (if the dimensions work). They are Mediterranean style buildings, with flat spaces and can be stacked in various ways. I don't know if it would be worth getting the game just for the buildings.

    1. Fitz-Badger,

I've never heard of that game before, but I'm going to look out for it as it sounds like the buildings might be very useful.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. If you scroll down this page there is a clear view of the components - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/roxley/santorini-learn-it-in-30-seconds-play-it-for-life?ref=bggforums

      From https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/194655/santorini/versions

It appears there are several versions so I would check carefully if buying on line.

    3. Nigel Drury,

Thanks for the links. I see what you mean about the different versions, some of which don't seem to be as good as others.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Thanks for this glowing review, Bob! It is encouraging to discover that my camera takes better pictures than I do! *;m also glad that others like the visual appeal of my small table set up.
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

The photos were great, and I really like the way you have used the rules with a larger tabletop than I can normally set up. The battle report read well, and the photographs certainly helped to make what was happening at each stage of the battle very easy to understand.

      Get well soon.

      All the best,

      Bob
