More progress with my Portable Napoleonic Wargame book

I've recently finished fighting the exemplar battle that will (hopefully) explain how the PORTABLE NAPOLEONIC WARGAME: DIVISION rules work. The result of the battle was by no means a foregone conclusion, but as in all battles, events reached a point where one side suddenly began to lose ... and lose quite badly they did.

The following photographs will hopefully give my regular blog readers a taste of how things went:

I'm now going to take a short break from work on my book, but I hope to begin writing again early next week.

  1. Hi Bob,

There are some very nice looking pictures there! It is good to see the Del Prado collection in action. The more I see these figures the more convinced I am about the basing used and will be using for the Spencer Smith figures in due course.

    Great looking action old chap!

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

Thanks for your kind comment. The figures do look good now that they have been varnished and based, and the number of figure per base loo right to me.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,

Having only recently dipped into Napoleonics, I've found your exemplar battles inspiring. Looking to put together a couple of small armies using 20mm Greenwood and Ball figures commissioned by Jack Scruby and sold by Historifigs here in the States. Thanks for sharing your progress on your latest project!

    1. Chris Miller,

The armies used on this tabletop to fight this particular battle were small. The comprised 24 infantry, 8 cavalry, 2 artillerymen (plus 1 gun), 2 subordinate commanders, and 1 commander on the French side and 24 infantry, 4 cavalry, 2 artillerymen (plus 1 gun), 2 subordinate commanders, and 1 commander on the Prussian side ... a total of 70 figures!

20mm figures should look great (it's my favourite scale even though my Napoleonics are all 25/28mm-scale) and I wish you luck with your project.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. At the risk of repeating myself, this game looks just the right size for me - looking forward to the published work.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

The tabletop is a square of green felt that is 32" x 32" and divided up into an 8 x 8 grid. I used just 70 figures to fight this battle ... but it felt like I was using more than that.

With luck (and a good following wind) the book should be published by late December or early January. It just depends if I can set aside enough free time to sit down a write what remains to be written.

      All the best,

      Bob
