First, a big THANK YOU to Pete Forster, who sent me a link to WARGAME MAP TOOL hex map drawing program. As the following images from the relevant page on Board Game Geek website show, it seems to meet all my requirements ... and possibly more!
I have now downloaded the program, and hope to try it out over the next few weeks.

That is a really interesting program. Thank you and Pete Forster for the information and the link.
ReplyDeleteWEK 3,
DeleteI have begun playing around with the program and so far its been easier to use than any of the others I have tried.
All the best,
Bob
BOB,
ReplyDeleteLooks as though you have found a solution to your grid based mapping. Will you draw up a large map and then some smaller maps for your games? Cheers. KEV.
Kevin Robertson (Kev),
DeleteI am not sure what I am going to do with regard to my maps. At present I am playing around with the program to learn how it works.
All the best,
Bob
I found this app earlier today and was about to send you a link, but I see you're ahead of me. Do please keep us updated as to how you get on with it.
ReplyDeleteNigel Drury,
DeleteI’ll certainly be doing a write-up about this program when I’ve had a chance to try out its various functions.
All the best,
Bob
Oooh, that looks good. Much as I love Mapping Board it has been off support for years and increasingly bits don't work any more.
ReplyDeleteMartin Rapier,
DeleteSo far, it seems to produce the sort of results I am looking to achieve. I’ll be reporting on my progress in the near future.
All the best,
Bob
I think it might do my head in but I'd like to try it as my hand drawn hexes numbering is all over the place. If there is a direct link I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteQuantrilltoy,
DeleteThere is a link to the download on the BoardGameGeek website. I have added it to this comment: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3685214/wargame-map-tool-an-app-for-creating-maps-for-hex
All the best,
Bob
Thanks for sharing this! It looks like a highly capable program and exactly the sort of thing needed for clean, grid-based mapping.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading your progress reports once you’ve put it through its paces!
Cheers, Andy
Andrew Bruce (Andy),
DeleteI have given the program a try, and have written a blog post today that shows the results of my first attempt. Its by no means perfect ... but it shows that the program has potential and its better and faster to produce than my homemade attempts.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob,
ReplyDeleteThat’s fantastic to hear! If it’s already beating out homemade attempts on the first try, it sounds like a massive win.
Cheers, Andy
Andrew Bruce (Andy),
DeleteThe more I play around with the program, the easier I am finding it to use. It's not perfect ... but it's much better than my homemade attempts to daw hex maps.
All the best,
Bob
Thanks for mentioning this program; looks potentially very useful and flexible. And free too! :-)
ReplyDeleteDavid Morfitt,
DeleteFree and good always gets my vote!
All the best,
Bob
