The Portable Wargame Compendium: A short progress report

Although I am still struggling to concentrate, I have made some progress on putting the PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM together.

I have had a contribution from Martin Rapier that describes the 1st Punic War campaign he fought using the FP3X3PW rules as well as a copy of David Barnes' eighteenth-century rules that are based on the Brigade-level rules from the PORTABLE NAPOLEONIC WARGAME.

I am still hoping to get the book published by the end of April, but this very much depends upon how much time I can spend putting the book together.

  1. Hi Bob,

I look forward to the Portable Wargame Compendium. I am more tempted to try a campaign using the 3X3 Portable Wargame Rules. However, I am torn how to spend my spare time: Play solo board wargames I haven't played before, getting rid of stuff before I move back to my house later this year, etc.

I hope you are feeling better. Please don't overwork yourself trying to get the compendium published in April

    1. Scott,

Thanks for your best wishes. I’m taking things easy in the hope that I’ll get better soon.

I hope that the Compendium will inspire you to try out a FP3x3PW campaign. I’ve done one, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The joy of FP3x3PW is the speed and simplicity with which a battle can be set up, played, and taken down again. I’m sure that once you’ve tried the rules, you’ll find a place for them in your collection.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Hi Bob,

I'm thinking about using my 15mm colonial British/Sudan figures and/or my 10mm 1877 Russo-Turkish armies for a campaign game. Until a few years ago, I played historical miniature wargames with a group in Windsor Ontario. The only chance I get to play a historical miniature game with other players is at a local game convention. Using the Fast Play rules will result in quicker games and require less space. And I can play anytime and I don't have to wait for a convention.

    3. Scott,

I will be featuring a battle using part of my own 15mm British/Sudan collection in the Compendium ... and I wish that I had some Russo-Turkish War figures to supplement them.

Through necessity (and inclination ... I have not yet found a wargame club that suited me) most of my wargaming is solo, although I do go to COW every year and to meetings of the Jockey Street irregulars as often as I can so that I can take part in face-to-face wargames. One of the joys of PW - and especially FP3x3PW - is the fact that a game can be set up on a coffee table and played to a satisfactory conclusion in under an hour. Furthermore, it lends itself to play by Skype/Zoom, so it is possible to fight a wargame against a remote opponent ... which is certainly an alternative to having to wait for the next convention to come around if you want a face-to-face wargame.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. The end of April is going to be exciting for me. My son comes home from training, an old friend will be visiting and the PW compendium is slated for release. It's nice to have some things to look forward to.

Hang in there Bob, don't hurt yourself trying to get it all done. I'd rather you gave it your best rather than in our hands ahead of schedule.

    Take care!

    1. Mr. Pavone,

It sounds as if you have a great month to look forward to!

Don't worry about me rushing work on the Compendium. It will get done when it gets done. I have a couple of battles to fight so that I can include some more battle reports, and I won't be doing that until I am feeling a lot better. That said, I feel better today than I did this time last week, and my ability to concentrate is certainly better, especially in the morning when I am fully rested.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Bob - Take it easy, take your time - and the thing will look after itself.

The the FP3x3PW seems to have taken on a life of its own - almost a 'Special edition' PWC in its own right!

Just asking - is there any contribution I could make?
    Cheers,
    Ion

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

Don't worry about me rushing to get the Compendium finished. If it doesn't come out until May or June, it will still get published eventually.

I did think about splitting all the FP3x3PW stuff off into a separate book, but decided not to. I am, however, thinking that this might be the first of a series of compendiums, and I hope that you will contribute to this one or the next. For example, I think that a 'How I did it ...' chapter about your current campaign would be of interest.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. I'll see what I can do. I still have the third battle to write up. Actually... spoiler alert. On the Deuteros Raid, the third was the final battle... Unfortunately other things have obtruded and the write-up still a couple of days away.

If you're talking about the larger 'Byzantiad' campaign, I think you have just prodded it into motion! I have a little bit of research to do to add the possibility of 'event cards' specific to the period I'm thinking about.

By the way, if there's anything from my past blog entries that are of use to you, you're welcome to use them.

      Cheers,
      Ion

    3. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

I’m looking forward to your next battle report!

It is the ‘Byzantiad’ campaign that I think would make an excellent addition to the PW Compendium’, either this one or the next.

Thanks for your kind offer to ‘raid’ your blog for potential contributions to the Compendium. I’ll certainly bear it in mind.

      All the best,

    1. Jon S,

The rules are a variant devised by Dave in Suffolk.

Don’t worry about me over going it; my wife won’t let me!

  6. I'll look forward to a set of PW C18th rules. I would second what others have said about possibly putting the 3x3 rules into their own book. They seem to be a really good solution to running mini campaigns so maybe some thoughts on campaigning would round it out into a separate volume. Good luck and don't over-do it!

    1. Jon S,

There is a degree of overlap between PW and FP3x3PW, which is why I think that putting them in the same compendium makes sense.

  7. Glad to hear you are starting to turn the corner. No rush to complete the compendium, and the longer it takes the more material it seems you'll have to include. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

    1. Mark Cordone,

I managed to do an hour’s work on the book today, but that’s all. Still, that’s better than I was able to manage last week!

I’ll be in contact once the draft is close to completion.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. I'm eager to see the 'compendium' - I'm sure there be lots of PW goodness between the covers.
If the 3x3 craze continues, there would be room for a 3x3 specific book; sure there would be some duplication from the compendium, but with enough new material a new book would be viable.

    1. Mike Taber,

I suspect that there may well be a need for a FP3x3PW book ... and I certainly have enough in the current compendium to publish a separate short book about the FP3x3PW. Unfortunately, the resulting Compendium would be a bit thin, so for the moment, I am going to keep the contents as they are ... but with the proviso that I may split the whole thing into two at a later date.

      All the best,

      Bob
