At the recent LITTLE WARS REVISITED day run in Woking, Surrey, Anthony Morton staged a Zulu War battle using some wonderful 54mm figures and THE PORTABLE WARGAME rules.
I'm not sure about the outcome of the battle as I have only got the photographs to go by, but it looked like a hard-fought affair, and yet again proved how attractive wargaming with 54mm-scale figures can be.

Hello Bob,
ReplyDeleteSplendid photos there of the A Morton 54mm Zulu War...on 54mm, my recently departed friend Gordon Brown- who was 80years- had a wonderful collection of metal 54mm Soldiers ...part of his favorite displays was his 'Rorkes Drift' one - which accounted for just one of his shelves in his Study ..the 54mm Soldiers and Zulus were made by 'IMPERIAL' ( Made in New Zealand- I think)...absolutely splendid...I miss my mate Gordon. Best Wishes. KEV.
Kev Robertson,
DeleteThere is something uniquely attractive about 54mm figures.
Your friends collection sounds wonderful. I hope that it went to a good home after he died.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob,
DeleteI believe Gordon's splendid collection of 54mm went to his younger Brother- Ron Brown who also was an avid Collector of Toy Soldiers. Gordon liked to convert figures and did make a lot of Australian Uniformed groups...such as the Australian RAF, NAVY and ARMY Marching Bands and Color Party...Gordon liked to display an ANZAC Day Procession. I did a lot of Mold making over the decades for Gordon for his 54mm Toy Soldier Projects. Regards. KEV.
Kev Robertson,
DeleteIts good to know that the collection went to someone who would love and cherish it, especially as it sounds to have been almost unique. Lets hope that it will eventually find a home where other people can admire it.
All the best,
Bob
Bob,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for posting these photos. I lost as the British but did at least manage to get half way to breaking the Zulus before being broken myself (I needed to kill ten Zulu units, the Zulus needed to kill six British ones). I actually played the game twice with two different people, neither of whom had played the Portable Wargame before-both Dave and Alan really enjoyed the rules and the game.
Best wishes, Anthony
Anthony Morton (Anthony),
DeleteIt sounds as if it was a great day of wargaming ... and I'm pleased that two new players had the opportunity to try out the rules.
All the best,
Bob
Those are fantastic Bob. As I grow older I grow fonder of 1/32 figures.
ReplyDeleteConrad Kinch,
DeleteI must admit that I share that growing love of these larger wargame figures.
All the best,
Bob
