I have a stack of things that I need to do that require my PC to be connected to the Internet, and over the next day or so I will be dealing with the backlog. This loss of service for approximately sixty hours has been a salutary lesson, and I will now be looking at an alternative way to connect my PC to the Internet should the problem reoccur, as there is only do so much I can do using my iPad and iPhone.

To repeat what others have said, it's good to hear that you are finally back on-line.
ReplyDeleteIn a comment on your earlier post I blithely suggested trying USB tethering, forgetting entirely that we live on different phone worlds, you on planet Apple and me on Android. Given this difference I thought you might be due a grovelling apology for a foolish suggestion but having fired up Google I found lots of advice on how to tether an iPhone to a Windows PC. One of the clearest explanations was in this YouTube video:

but it does require some components of iTunes to be installed on the PC. So catch 22 applies: to connect the PC via tethering the PC needs to already be connected to the internet to download the software (though maybe as an iPhone user you already have ITunes installed?)

DeleteI may be an iPhone user at present, but the contract is due for renewal very soon, and I'll see if I can get a better deal by moving over to an Android phone.
I already have iTunes on my PC, so tethering might be an option. It's certainly something I am seriously considering.

Bob, if you lose internet again, you should be able to connect your pc to your iPhone's Hotspot. I have done so in the past with success.

Good news Bob. Data sharing via mobile 4g hot spot is very expensive when streaming as we discovered. can you claim any compensation?

4G dongle from Vodafone or the like should do the trick? As it's only a back up, a 'pay as you go' would be fine so no need for an account..

Bob - my pleasure.. can't take the credit though, a number of the blogs I follow have a sailing content, and the long term cruisers and 'live aboards' all connect via these dongles..

DeleteI've actually found one for £25.00 plus the cost of a data package that I can buy as and when I need it. It will work with my laptop when I'm abroad ask well as with my PC if our Virgin access goes down again.
