Kitchen revamp

We are having our kitchen revamped next week ... and that means that over the next few days we have to empty everything out of our present kitchen cupboards. This is no doubt going to be a daunting and time-consuming task, and I am not sure how much 'spare' time I am going to have over the next week or so for wargaming. (A preliminary look has made me realise just how much stuff one manages to get into a kitchen! It is even more crammed than my toy/wargames room!)

I will try to blog whilst our home life is disrupted (i.e. until the kitchen revamp is over, and everything is back in place) but I might not be able to maintain my output of a blog post per day until life returns to something approaching 'normal'.

  1. These things happen!. About 3 months ago our 20-year old hob went phut, so we got a new one and an oven. The just a few days ago our 25+ year clothes dryer tossed the towel... It seems an endless parade of stuff conking out...

    1. Archduke Piccolo,

Over the last year we have had to replace our washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, and vacuum cleaner … and now our oven!

The kitchen revamp was planned as part of our preparations for eventually selling our house, even though we know that new owners will strip it out and replace it. The revamp includes new doors etc., for the existing cabinet carcasses, which are still in good condition.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Last year we had our kitchen completely rebuilt AND all three bathrooms, all at the same time !!!! For 7 weeks our house was in complete turmoil. We even had to eat out virtually every day, that really was a hardship !!!! However once all was done we were very happy and looking back now it really does not seem to have been all that bad. Its a bit like holidays, a long time coming and then over in a flash. I am sure the end results will be very worthwhile. Regards.

    1. Tony Adams,

Wow! That must have been a major disruption to your home life! We did consider revamping our bathroom, but decided that it didn’t need it.

I don’t know how long we will live with the revamped kitchen before we move, but it will certainly be worth it … once it is done!

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi BOB,
A Kitchen Make Over is so good to do- when it is finished it gives you a real lift! It even might change your mind about moving too. Hope things don't take too long to get back to normal. Cheers. KEV.

To be honest, I’d rather not have to move, but my arthritis is making it progressively difficult to get up the stairs to my toy/wargame room, and since my operation, the situation has got worse.

With luck, we will be back to normal by the week beginning 16th of the month.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
Yes- if your having problems with the Stairs - a move to something more easier on your mobility is best. When we had our Kitchen re-built it took a day and a half- that included everything like electricals and tile splash back- simply brilliant work. All the best. KEV.

We are looking to move to a bungalow or two-storey house with a straight staircase that could take a stair lift if necessary.

The fitters have set aside three days to do the work, but hope that it will only take two.

      All the best,

      Bob

    4. BOB,
That is a good idea to move to a Bungalow- Single Story. If you cannot avoid a Stair Case - putting in a Lift is a good idea. I'd go for Single Story. Making headway with my Dwarf Cottages and getting closer to painting them - however the Craft Shop is closed due to Covid-19...so I may not have the right Acrylic Paint to do the job. Hope your Kitchen doesn't take to long to complete- it'l be great! Stay well there. Regards. KEV.

Our preference is for a bungalow, but they are becoming quite a rarity. Many have been ‘converted’ into what are termed chalet bungalows, with the loft converted into additional bedrooms.

Good luck with finding a source of acrylic paint. Can you buy them online? That’s how I managed to get hold of the paint I needed during the first lockdown.

The kitchen revamp is due to take three days. Hopefully it won’t overrun.

      All the best,

      Bob

    6. BOB,
I've been lucky and found some suitable Acrylic Artist's Paint at our Local Hardware -which despite Lock Down is still open for business. Cheers. KEV.

That is excellent news! At least you won’t have to wait until the end of the lockdown to paint your buildings.

  4. Good luck! My neighbors had their patio and kitchen redone recently. The patio was finished in an amazing amount of time given the amount of earth the men had to remove *by bucket*. They did a great job too. Their kitchen has taken a bit longer than they'd like but that seems to be par for the course as far as renovations go. Make a staycation out of it! Hopefully you have a nice neighborhood cafe or restaurant you and the wife can visit. I wish I could offer you advice but renovating kitchens was not my thing. I installed air conditioning systems in homes.
    Good luck!

    1. Mr. Pavone,

Our patio also needs some work done on it, and it is on our ‘to do’ list. The existing slabs need to be taken up and relaid as some of them have sunk slightly and become loose.

We have already got plans in place to be out as much as we can during the revamp, and we have several restaurants and cafes to visit during the three days that we will be without a kitchen.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. I recall getting a wall betwixt rooms removed and a new kitchen put in. I remember my daughters, who were wee at the time, using an upturned clothes basket as a makeshift table. Hope all goes as well as it possibly can.
