After some great suggestions, a shortlist has emerged. The two frontrunners are
- Albion (probably the Commonwealth of Albion, ruled over by the Queen and Lord Protector, Queen Gloriana)
- Avalon (probably the Commonwealth of Avalon, ruled over by The Queen and Lord Protector, Queen Valberta)
I am tending to favour the latter of the two as the possessives of the country and monarch are Avalonian and Valbertan respectively, which seem to trip off the tongue slightly easier than Albionian and Glorianan. I also like the mythical links back to Arthurian Britain, one of the earliest imagi-nations.
Whatever you choose will become ‘normal’ after a short while of using, Bob…that’s a fun part of the Imagi-Nations way, I think. What a great project 😊. The previous thread on the subject prompted a massive response, I thought.
ReplyDeleteMartin S.,
DeleteVery true ... and I expect that once the whole thing starts to roll, I'll wonder why I didn't chose Avalon or Albion in the first place.
The response to this topic has been interesting, and I have learned a lot from the reasoning behind some of the suggestions.
All the best,
Bob
BOB,
ReplyDeleteMy vote is for Avalon.
Stay well there in London- expect things there have cooled down now that your going into Autumn. Cheers. KEV.
Kev Robertson (Kev),
DeleteThanks for your vote for Avalon. I think that is very likely to be the choice that I opt for.
It is beginning to get colder, and we have had our central heating on today. Not bad for the last week of September.
All the best,
Bob
And whatever you do Bob, do not name the nation Elbonia.
ReplyDeleteIn Scott Adams “Dilbert” cartoons the Elbonians are not very advanced militarily. Not very advanced in any sense - although to do look remarkably like old-school Sassanid Persians. So much so that I considered making an Elbonians army for Hordes of the Things. 😂🤣
Cheers,
Geoff
Elliesdad (Geoff),
DeleteI seem to remember that mud featured quite highly in the economy of Elbonia … and that at one time they only recruited right-handlers into the Elbonian Armed Forces.
All the best,
Bob
As well as the large numbers of poorly armed “hordes” of infantry, one of the things that dissuaded me from going ahead with building a HotT Elbonian army was the thought that all those infantry calf/knee deep in mud would have meant an awful lot of conversion work - specifically lopping off the figure bases and feet.
DeleteCheers,
Geoff
Elliesdad (Geoff),
DeleteI think you were wise not to move forward with this project!
All the best,
Bob
The name Avalon even has a bit of history in gaming.
ReplyDeleteMr. Pavone,
DeleteAmazingly, I had not made that connection until you mentioned it!
All the best,
Bob
Avalon and Valberta sound best to my ear. I look forward to their exploits.
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
DeleteThey evolved from the suggestions made to me by the 'hive mind' of my regular blog readers.
All the best,
Bob
If you go with Avalon you could use an apple on the flag. Incidentally, The Guns of Avalon is a very good book, part of Roger Zelazny's Amber series of novels.
ReplyDeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteI'm very wary of using an apple as a symbol on anything! I understand that Apple Inc. is rather litigious when it comes to anything that resembles their trademark!
I again show my ignorance of fantasy literature by admitting that I've never heard of Roger Zelazny's AMBER books. I must do some research and find out more about them.
All the best,
Bob
Perhaps an apple tree?
DeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteThanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately that is currently being used by the Conservative and Unionist Party in the UK (our current shambolic government) as their party logo.
All the best,
Bob
Bob-
ReplyDeleteI like Avalon. You know where you are with Avalon.
Cheers,\
Ion
Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteCheers! It looks as if the popular vote is for Avalon!
All the best,
Bob
Sounds like a good decision. Avalon conjures up lots of great, and positive imagery.
ReplyDeleteNundanket,
DeleteCheers! I’m currently writing a suitable backstory that I hope to publish by Monday.
All the best,
Bob
Let’s hope the lawyers for Roxy Music aren’t following your blog Bob. 😉
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Geoff
Elliesdad (Geoff),
DeleteI suspect that if they were, I’d have heard by now. (I must admit that I’d forgotten that Roxy Music recorded a track with that name.)
All the best,
Bob
