The MF&FMLR model railway project: Almost there!

I understand that model railways – somewhat like wargame collections – are never quite finished, but that they reach a point where they are almost there ... and that is the situation with regard to the Mucking Flats & Fobbing Marsh Light Railway!

Some parts of the layout look a bit bare, and I want to add some bushes and scrub as well as static grass to make it look a little less like the centre is a large lawn surrounding a series of muddy/marshy pools, but I can now do that at my leisure. I also want to paint the edge of the frame matt black and add a back scene, but in the meantime, I can run my various narrow-gauge 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 locomotives and rolling stock around it whenever the mood takes me.

    1. The Good Soldier Svjek,

Adding the flock made the whole thing come alive. It’s still not quite finished, but I’m happy to use it as it is until it is completed.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob,
I am quite inspired by the figures that KEV has got for his new railway layout. Perhaps populating yours could really bring it alive! Just a thought.

    1. Steve,

You are right, I do need to add some figures and have been looking around for some suitable ones. I’ve seem some that might do, but I haven’t bought any yet.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Adding the flock made a lot of difference and didn’t take very long to do. Once I’ve got a back scene ready, I hope to shoot a short video of the layout in action.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Lovely set up. Perhaps a short video of it with the train in motion could be posted?

  7. Well done, Bob! I never actually managed to complete a layout when I dabbled in 009 narrow gauge many, many years ago, so I stand in awe of your success. It would be great to see a video of a train running on it! Best wishes, Arthur.

Cheers! I have to do some more work on the scenic side of the layout, but until I do, I can have fun running my locos, carriages, and wagons around it.

      All the best,

      Bob

  9. Well that looks really, really good Bob! I can't but help think that you now need to add a river section and have some boats/ships on there are targets for the guns and torpedoes!

Well, it’s an idea that I’ve considered … but I may have to wait until I’ve moved home before I can expand my layout.

  11. An impressively simple layout, Bob - one with more than one story behind it. I'm thinking, added to the narrative of its construction over the last few weeks, but the story behind what the layout shows. And I do believe it to be the stage for the occasional... play? Well done!

I’m quite please with how it’s turned out so far and I don’t think that it’s too bad for a first attempt at building a model railway.

I’ve managed to try a few terrain modelling ideas along the way, and what I learned will be very helpful in my wargaming.

Most importantly, I now have a simple oval of track and a siding around which I can run my collection of second-hand trains … and that should give me hours of play/fun in the future.

      All the best,

      Bob

I must admit that I’m pleased with the way my layout looks. As to seeing some of my armies fighting over it … well, that’s a distinct possibility.

      All the best,

      Bob
