Missing posts ... and anal retentiveness!

Blogger has not yet reinstated the blog entries that went 'missing' during the recent outage, and I have decided that if they are not back on my blog by this evening, I will re-post them.

Strange as it may seem, I have been saving my blog entries as a word-processed diary almost since I started writing my blog, and this means that I still have a record of each and every blog entry I have written (but unfortunately not the comments). Every time the diary reaches forty pages, I print it off and it is stored in a display folder. I printed Volume 32 last week (which means that so far my blog 'diary' has reached a length of over 1,200 pages!). Every so often I pick a volume at random and have a flick through its pages ... and this can be a very interesting experience, especially if it is one from a year or so back!

Now doing this could be classed as being anally retentive ... and it probably is ... but having worked with information technology for many years, I know that you should always create at least one back-up of whatever you have produced and, if possible, make a hard copy.

You know it makes sense!

  1. You are not being anally retentive, Bob; keeping a copy of your blog, especially a hard copy, is extremely sensible. Just think how much poorer our culture would be if people in the past had not done this; how else would we know about some of the historic events that have happened?

  2. Paul,

What you have written is very true. There is a definite need to keep hard copies of documents whenever and wherever possible, but I would not count my blog as historic; it is pure ephemera!

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Periodically, I import my entire blog to a free Wordpress blog as a backup. The recent blogger problems may finally prompt me to move my entire blog to a hosted Wordpress solution where I have full control over it all!

  4. Andy McMaster,

I had not considered exporting my entire blog to an electronic back-up location, but the idea has a lot to commend it.

I would consider moving my blog to another service if the sort of problems that occurred last week were to happen again. I have heard good things from other people about Wordpress, and it would certainly be on my list of possible alternatives.

    All the best,

    Bob
