Other people's Portable Wargame battle reports: More from the Schleswig-Holstein War

Martin Smith has fought another battle set during the Schleswig-Holstein War. As on the previous occasion, he substituted Confederate American Civil War figures for the Danes and Union figures for the Prussians,

A full report of can be found on the PORTABLE WARGAME Facebook page, but the following are some photographs of his battle:

The rules used were taken from THE PORTABLE WARGAME, with a few amendments, taken from Alan Saunders’ English Civil War variant.

  1. Hi Bob,
I think I've mentioned this before: A good candidate for a Grid Based game would be 'The Battle of Dorking' in 15mm...any ideas on 15mm British Home Guard? The Prussians in 15mm? Maybe after I'm finished my MARS 1860 Project. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

The Victorian Military Society ran a game based on the battle at several shows last year (see here). They used figures in Home Service uniforms for the British, some of them painted in Volunteer Grey.

It’s certainly a project that would be worth pursuing after you’ve finished your wonderful Mars project,

I hope that you a feeling better,

      Bob

    2. Hi Bob,
Thank you for the Link to 'The Battle of Dorking' 1871...looks a most enjoyable game for sure. I'm thinking my MARS 1860 could take up the rest of the year- am very much looking forward to developing the Project. Cheers. KEV.

    3. Kev Robertson (Kev),

THE BATTLE OF DORKING game would probably have been seen at more shows this year if we hadn’t been hit by the pandemic,

I love the models you have made for your MARS 1860 project, and look forward to seeing more as your project develops.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Looks like a nice setup! I just made some hills and plowed fields today for my setup along with some paper ACW soldiers. I also drew up some terrain geomorphs like Peter uses over on Grid Based Wargaming.
Do you have any resources you use for generating random but reasonable orders of battle for games?

    1. Mr. Pavone,

I am afraid to say that I don’t currently have a method for generating random ORBATs for PW battles ... but I did write a scenario generator that included randomised forces for each side. The relevant blog entry was published last June, and can be seen here.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Thanks so much, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll be able to hack that a bit for my own purposes easily.
I posted some pictures of my newly assembled PW kit on my Instagram. You or your readers can search #portablewargame to quickly find them. I'm username agamemnontriforce , that's the account where I post modeling and gaming pictures.

    3. Mr. Pavone,

      Glad to be of assistance.

Unfortunate I don’t have Instagram, but I’ll try to find a way to view your photographs if it is at all possible.

      All the best,

      Bob
