Some armoured fighting vehicles for my World War Two renovated 20mm-scale German army

The current lockdown has given me time to do some more renovation work on my extensive 20mm-scale World War 2 collection. I've been concentrating on my German troops, and this time I have painted, varnished, and based an number of armoured fighting vehicles (and a few soft-skin vehicles) to equip what I hope will by my first 'Panzer formation in a box'.

The models come from a variety of sources, and include ones manufactured by Airfix, ROCO Minitanks, Matchbox, Early War Miniatures, and a scratch-build.

    1. Ross Mac,

      Cheers!

I’ve just spent this morning sorting out some Russian stuff to use against the Germans. With luck (and in the expectation that the lockdown is going to last another month at least), I hope to renovate and rebase enough Russian vehicles, guns, and figures to give my Germans a run for their money!

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. MrF,

This is a project that I’ve been planning to do for years. It was inspired by Lionel Tarr’s famous Eastern Front campaign, as featured in several of Donald Featherstone’s books and the book published by the ahistory of Wargaming Project.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. A nice, compact formation. I've never thought to varnish my kit, and if it were not now such a mind-boggling task, what I see here would induce me to consider it (most of my vehicles aren't based, either.

I'm presuming the scratchbuild is the 15cm infantry gun mounted on the PzII chassis. A very useful addition!

I'm also supposing that the Hanomag and the Horsch represent transports for the rifle regiments, rather than battalions?

    Looking forward to more -
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

Keeping to the ‘formation in a box’ limit is a useful discipline. As to gloss varnishing my models ... well I’ve done it to protect them from any damage they might suffer during handling. I’ve tried matt varnish ... but never had much luck.

The 150mm SPG was the bottom half of a damaged ROCO Pzkpfw III with a new superstructure built on it. I cut off the existing road wheels are replaced them with some Airfix Stug wheels from the spares box.

By the way, you are right; the Hanomag and Boxer truck are the transport from the rifle regiments, although at the moment I can’t quite get all the kit in the box if I use both of them!

I’m now moving on to do some Russian kit.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. That looks like a venerable Matchbox Pz III. I still have three of those....

    1. Martin Rapier,

Sorry to disappoint you, but it is actually a ROCO one.

      All the best,

      Bob
