Three months on ...

On 1st January, my blog looked like this:

It is now three months on ... and it is amazing how much our world has changed in such a short time.

By that day, Chinese authorities had identified 266 people in Wuhan who had been infected by an unknown virus, and that the Huanan Seafood Market had been closed for cleaning and disinfection. Seven days later, it was announced that influenza, avian influenza, adenovirus, and coronaviruses SARS and MERS had been eliminated as the respiratory pathogen that was causing the infection, and that is was due to a new COVID virus.

From then on, the spread of infection grew with increasing rapidity, and today we find a huge segment of the world's population is in lockdown in the hope that the various national health services can cope with the pandemic.

Three months ago I wished my regular blog readers and fellow bloggers a safe and healthy 2020. Today I'd like to extend those best wishes to everyone out there.

STAY SAFE AND STAY WELL!

One would wish that we weren’t ... but we have to make the best of the situation we find ourselves in.

    1. Alastair,

I’ve been shopping today ... for the first time in nearly a week. The supermarket was not very crowded, but there were one or two idiots with strange ideas how far 2m is!

      Keep safe and keep well,

  5. Hi Bob,
Certainly things have changed- we went from months and months of the Bush Fires here straight into Covid in a matter of a few weeks. Deaths across the World are terrifyingly clear how serious this crisis is- thankfully our death rate Nationally is relatively low at 22 People. My Partner (Chris) and our friend Heather were in China just prior to the outbreak- we count our blessings that the cards were in our favor. We're in Lock Down now only being allowed Grocery Shopping, Doctor Appointments and Pharmacy visits- it has been this way for many weeks. To-day Lt Col Greg Mc has organised an AWI play by e-Mail battle for us to do- I'm General Clinton and I'm presently waiting on the results of the initial orders that I had placed this afternoon. To-morrow I'll be scratch building 25mm Canal Martian Dwellings for our MARS 1860 Project - after which I may produce a British Gunboat- to keep busy. Keep well there in London. Best Wishes. KEV. (Australia).

    1. Kev Robertson,

Australia has had a lot to deal with over the past few months, and the current crisis must be hindering the recovery from the forest fires.

Your lockdown doesn’t sound too different from ours. Staying indoors isn’t too difficult at present as the outside air temperature is low and doesn’t encourage one to stand about outside for long. How easy it will be when the warner weather starts is another thing entirely.

Taking part in a PBEM game sounds interesting, I’m currently involved in a game set in Ancient Rome where the players communicate using WhatsApp. I’m having great fun, and it helps to keep my brain active.

Good luck with modelling your next set of buildings ... and I hope that you do manage to build a gunboat as well.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Bob,
Thank you for the reply. We're heading into Winter which does not help as it is our Cold and Flue Season. Chris is 70 and accordingly to the Government advice- isn't allowed to leave our Home- unless absolutely necessary. I listened to projections for the USA and UK and pandemic modelling of the virus for the future isn't very good- it is very scary worldwide. When will it all end? ....if a Vaccination can be discovered- there is hope we'll come out of it by the end of 2020. All the best. KEV.

    3. Kev Robertson,

As a 70 year-old, I am following the same regime as Chris. Besides going shopping, I go out into our garden and for the occasional walk. Other than that, I’ve been staying inside and away from any potential source of infection.

It’s amazing how many people have not yet grasped how infectious COVID-19 is. I recently mentioned on a discussion group that by reducing the infection rate from 1:2.5 to 1:1,5 we would make a tremendous difference to the potential death rate. I was taken to task by someone from the US for peddling fake news, even though I showed the mathematics behind my assertion.

We know that it’s going to get a lot worse in the UK before it gets better. Hopefully it will not be as bad as it has been in Italy and Spain, but until we have a viable vaccine, the chance of infection will continue to be a serious threat to the health of the world’s population.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  6. Bob,

Hope you stay well and all the other readers too. I am lucky in having skills to be able to work remotely but work is definitely drying up for the self employed like myself.

    All the best

    1. Dave,

Thanks for your best wishes. Sorry to read that work is beginning to dry up for you. Hopefully the lockdown will be shorter than it might have been if people continue to minimise contact and reduce the spread.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  7. Hi Bob, good post. Three months ago we had just arrived back from nearly two years in Spain, looking forward to a new start back home. I'm just so glad we got back when we did. It's going to be a very strange Easter. Take care of yourself.

    1. ‘Lee,

Coming back from Spain when you did seems to have turned out to have been a very wise decision. The weather here might not be as good, but at least your family is close by. As to Easter ... well, other than the plethora of chocolate eggs and hot cross buns in the shops, I doubt if most people will even notice it is happening.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

    1. Ross Mac,

It is indeed! The transition between being retired and the lockdown was nowhere near as traumatic as it could have been going from full-time work to being confined to ones home.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob
