My Khakistani ironclad battleship

Khakistan is an imagi-nation that draws its inspiration from Ottoman Turkey, and when thinking about a design for an ironclad battleship for the Khakistani Navy, I looked at the various warships that served in the Ottoman Navy during the 1880s and 1890s. After considering the options, I chose to base my design on that of the Osmaniye-class.

These ships were constructed in the 1860s as broadside ironclads, ...

... but they were modernised and reconstructed in the early 1890s. They were re-boilered, re-engined, and rearmed with two 9.4-inch/24cm guns mounted in single centreline barbettes fore and aft of the ship’s main superstructure.

The modernised ships looked like this …

… and when ‘cartoonised’, the design looked like this.

  1. BOB,
Great work there on the new Battleship designs - you really have captured the right look of the battleship with you Cartoon rendition. Look forward to your finished models. Hope your well there Bob. Cheers. KEV.

I’ve already started work on the model of the Khakistani ironclad battleship … and I think that it is probably going to be the best one I’ve built so far.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hello there Bob,,

Gotta love a rebuilt Turkish ironclad! I will be interested to see how you tackle the barbette guns - I have been thinking about similar for a couple of ideas I am toying with….

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

The Turks put a lot of money into rebuilding obsolete ironclads … and most of the rebuilt ships were pretty useless and were never used.

The barbette guns were very simple to make, and are very similar in concept to the guns you built for your ACW ships.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. After playing with the software for our 3D printer and seeing these diagrams, I think I have my next 3D design project picked out. This should be easy enough to hack together with the software but challenging enough to build on my skills developed thus far.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

Good luck with this project! I would love to see what your models look like when they are finished.

      All the best,

  4. Featherstone talks about this cartoonization in his Naval Wargames; he extends it to the weaponry, reducing it to a more manageable number and variety so that, say, eight 12in, 12 6in, and 24 3in becomes four six-inch and six three-inch guns.

    1. Jennifer,

I well remember that chapter in Donald Featherstone's book about naval wargaming, and I may well adopt something similar for my 'cartoon' warships.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Dear Bob the ship design cartoonized looks great and is in the spirit of the era. Just a question is their an apposing force to Khakistan ? Thank you Quinn

      Thanks for your kind comments.

Besides former provinces that are now independent (e.g. Stalbania), the Khakistanis could end up in conflicts with the major powers (Burgundy and Schwarzenberg) over any number of issues.

      All the best,

      Bob
