A change of project can keep you fresh

For sometime I’ve been working on and off on my Belle Époque project, but since work on the Second PW Compendium is almost over, I feel the need to have a change of project to keep my wargaming interest fresh.

Back during the COVID pandemic lockdown I did a lot of work on my Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War project, and I’ve decided to return to it for a time.

Some of the German vehicles that I renovated, varnished, and rebased during the COVID pandemic.
Some more of the German vehicles that I renovated, varnished, and rebased during the COVID pandemic.

I might even manage to fight a few battles with the figures I’ve already renovated, varnished, and rebased as well as add some more of the collection ... so watch this space for developments!

  1. Hi Bob,

A change is as good as a rest as they say (or as quoted in Zulu “A prayers as good as a bayonet on a day like this”) although in my case I have somewhat bucked the trend with the continuation of the Ironclads….

They are lovely looking models and I always had a soft spot for the SDKFZ 222 armoured car - probably due to the Airfix German Recce set! Keen to see where you take this next as I know it is a particular interest of yours.

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David,

Very true! I felt that I was getting a bit stale, and rather than do nothing, I decided to return to this earlier project … for which I have loads of stuff as yet to be renovated.

The armoured car is from the old Airfix set, and the rest are a mixture of ROCO, Matchbox, Viking, EWM, and a ROCO-based scratch build.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,
A chance to refresh your interest is good- hope you can get a few games in too of the Eastern Front. How have you been? Have you made a start on Radiotherapy? All the best. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I have plans for a mini-campaign to try out a few ideas that have been whirling around in my head for some time. As to my radiotherapy … I’ve not been given a start date yet, but I hope that it won’t be too long before I begin treatment.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  3. We all need a change of scenery from time to time to keep things fresh. I know I certainly do. Having spent most of my recent limited gaming time in the Napoleonic era, I've just packed it all away and am now contemplating something with planes, tanks etc, which I'm certainly looking forward too:).

    1. Steve J.,

You are spot on! I admire people who are singleminded enough to stick to one period and one project, but I need a change every so often in order to maintain my interest.

Good luck with your new project.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Fine looking models, I'm looking forward to some Eastern Front battle reports. As for me I usually have at least two projects going along with my RPG campaign. I bounce back and forth as the mood strikes me. I'm currently working on my historical imagi-nations pike and shot campaign, contemplating painting another Hyborian age army and with the anniversary of Waterloo coming up a refight of the campaign. You may distract me with your panzers...

    1. Mark Cordone,

I also usually have several projects on the go, but recently the Compendium seems to have taken up most of my spare time, and for some reason I didn't want to go back to my Belle Époque project straight away. I did think about doing some work on my Napoleonic collection, but in the end I decided to do some work on my Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War one instead.

As an aside, I did like the way your current Hyborian armies looked in the Compendium, and I'm sure that they will inspired others to follow your example.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. thanks. One of the great things about the Portable Wargame is the small number of figures required to play, it allows me to build up a nice collection of armies. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your WW2 games

    3. Mark Cordone,

I remember a conversation that I had some years ago with Phil Barker when we discussed the need for wargame rules that encouraged wargamers to create lots of small armies. He came up with DBA and HOTT … and many years later, I developed PW.

This afternoon I started work on renovating some Russian artillery for my WW2 project, and I hope to feature them on my blog early next week.

      All the best,

      Bob
