Four and a half million hits!

Yesterday my visit counter hit a new high … four and a half million hits!

I wrote my first blog post on 18th September 2008, and at the time I had no idea of the impact blogging was going to have on my wargaming life. Now, some fourteen and a half years and over 5,100 blog posts later, I’ve passed another major milestone.

Back in 2008, when I started this blog, I was still working: now I am retired, and have been for nearly nine years. In that time I’ve written or co-authored well over twenty books, most of which are wargame-related, and suffered from colon/bowel and prostate cancers. I’m still going strong (although I am a bit slower getting up and down stairs!) and hope to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

I’m now looking to break the five million ‘hits’ barrier … so keep visiting my blog and I’ll try to keep writing blog posts that will be of interest.

  2. Hello there Bob,

Many, many congratulations on the milestone reached and I am very confident the 5 million will settled in fairly short order! It has been an incredible journey and I know that for me it has been especially inspirational and has led me down a number of paths I would certainly have not trodden otherwise!

All the very best and here’s to the 5 million!

Thanks for your congratulations and your kind words. The fact that blogging has helped me to find new friends and become reacquainted with old ones is the biggest benefit from my point of you.

      All the best,

  11. It's that broad appeal, Bob, that brings in the readers. Although I have a fairly extensive reading list, there are a special half-dozen or so that have long remained my 'must see' favourites. It seems I'm far from alone in counting 'Wargaming Miscellany' pretty much the top of the list.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I just ramble on about life in general and wargaming in particular. I also try to reply to every comment both out of courtesy and because I find the interaction with my blog readers helps me to formulate my ideas.

      All the best,

  13. Hi Bob

Congratulations, that is really some achievement.

Even more impressive, to me at least, is the amount of feedback you get, and the inter action with your many followers.

Reading your post prompted me to check my own stats. I was surprised to see it shows 399,539. To be honest I find it a little hard to believe that I have had so many hits.

I am sure it is not necessary to say "keep on blogging" I am sure that it is now such an important part of your life that you would miss your regular blog as much as your many readers would.

    best regards

    Paul

    1. Thistlebarrow,

Cheers! When I started writing my blog, I never expected to reach much more than a couple of hundred ‘hits’ … and now I’m measuring my ‘hits’ in millions!

As I wrote in reply to Archduke Piccolo, I always try to reply to every comment out of courtesy and because the interaction helps me to formulate my ideas.

Nearly 400,000 ‘hits’ is a very respectable number … and in my opinion, you deserve to have even more regular blog readers and ‘hits’.

I shall certainly carry on blogging. It’s helped me get into the habit of writing, and I don’t think that I’d ever have written a single book if I hadn’t been a blogger.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Hi Bob

I have certainly found blogging to be very satisfying, and has had a considerable constructive influence on my wargaming. I find the discipline of writing a blog each week (one for the campaign and one for the general blog) keeps my routine going well.

Like you, I never expected it to become so (relatively) popular. Unlike you I do not get the feedback. I don't really miss it, but I do like it when I get some. However I have always considered the blog something I do for my own benefit and satisfaction, with the hope of spreading my thoughts on wargaming a poor second.

I suspect that it our own different ways blogging has been a very good thing and made a considerable contribution to our mental well being.

      regards

      Paul

    3. Paul,

The question I regularly ask myself is would I blog if nobody else read or commented on what I had written?

The answer is - of course - yes! Like you, I find the process helpful on many levels, both as a record of what I have done or I am thinking about doing and as a means of formulating my thinking. It has also given me a work discipline and writing practice, all of which has help me to keep grounded.

As I have written before, I personally think that your blog deserves great recognition. Yours shows that with proper organisation, it is possible for a wargamer to fight regular battles that fit into a campaign structure without it becoming a chore. You are able to tailor what you do to your particular requirements, and your enthusiasm shines through.

I don’t know if you are aware of Chris Kemp’s NOT QUITE MECHANISED blog (https://notquitemechanised.wordpress.com), but like yours it is devoted to fighting a campaign. In his case, it is the Axis invasion of the USSR … and has been going on for over thirty years! His campaign has just reached Stalingrad, and his most recent blog post indicates that the Soviets are just about holding on.

      All the best,

      Bob

  14. Congratulations Bob!!! It’s a well deserved milestone. Your hard work and perseverance in maintaining the blog has made it one of the the most popular for wargamers. Quinn.
