When I put together my photo-report on SALUTE 50, I expressed my regret that none of my photographs of the Continental War Society’s game – Fighting at Forbach – had been saved. Thanks to David Barnes – who was able to take some photos – I can now rectify this situation.
My thanks go to David for sending these photographs to me.
Cheers Bob, glad to be of help. I think I was there quite early in the day, so the 'battle' was still in its preliminary stages. Continental Wars Society are always good value!
ReplyDeleteDavid in Suffolk,
DeleteThanks very much for the photographs. They fill a hole in my coverage of SALUTE 50.
The CWS always has a good game on show (including my PW on one occasion!) and they enjoy talking to the punters … which gets a double plus good from me!
All the best,
Bob
Thanks for sharing these Bob as these are the sort of games I like to see as they are ones that I could easily prelicate at home. Whilst the big and very detailed games (dioramas?) are nice to behold, they are not something I could achieve unless a lottery win came along at some point!

DeleteCheers! I must admit that although many of the game on show at SALUTE 50 are very impressive, I sometimes wonder if they might be rather off putting to many wargamers, especially those who are new to the hobby and who do not have the time, space, or money to put on games like the ones that they see. I think that there is definitely a place for show games where punters can look at a game and think 'I could do that!'.
All the best,
Bob
A common theme with friends is that there isn't enough variety at shows, either scale wise or of the 'I could do that' kind for those entering the hobby, or with limited space etc. Sadly I've read too many comments on various Blogs where people have put on such games, only for them to be belittled as not up to 'show standard' etc. Sad really.

DeleteThis is one of the reasons why I haven’t put on a game at a show for many years. The last time did, I was told that although we had had lots of visitors and participants, the judges were not going to even bother to include us in the ‘Best of Show’ competition. As one of them said, ‘anyone could put this game at their club!’ … which was the point!
All the best,
Bob
Exactly the point Bob, which I don't think the organisers get these days. No wonder they struggle to get games put on at shows if this is the attitude they take.

DeleteOne problem is that some clubs pander to this. I remember visiting a club some years ago with a mind to joining, only to be told that the club’s current project was to prepare the game they were going to put on at a show. They intended to do almost nothing else during the year, and members were expected to buy and paint a quota of figures etc. When I asked what I could do at the club if that wasn’t my thing, I was told in no uncertain terms that membership of that club probably wasn’t for me.
I never joined.
All the best,
Bob
