A quick update

I am now just over a week into my course of Erleada, and although I am suffering a few side effects (including fatigue and joint paint), they are irksome rather than downright unpleasant. I just have to take things a bit slower than I am used to … which is why I missed writing a blog post yesterday.

This does not mean that I have been idle, and I have made some progress on several projects, including the renovation of some figures for my Belle Époque project, adding another set of rules to my Gallimaufry of Colonial Wargames, and making some notes for my Waddington’s CAMPAIGN-based Napoleonic campaign. I’m only making a little headway on each project, but they are at least moving forward.

  1. BOB,
It is good that you are chipping away at your Projects- keeping your interest and entertainment going is important when your not feeling 100%. Best Wishes. KEV.

I am finding that doing even just half an hour each day on a project helps to keep my spirits up.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Mark Cordone,

Cheers! I’d also like a quick recovery, but I suspect I’m in for the long haul.

      All the best,

  3. "Moving forward" is about all I can do much of the time, but even one model painted or assembled or a few pages read can still activate the good brain chemicals.

You are right about how making even a little progress can help one feel better. It’s certainly helping me.

      All the best,

  4. That's good to hear you are keeping on with the projects Bob, even if it is at a slightly lower pace.
I don't know if you are a big podcast listener, but there are some good history based ones out there if you want something hobby related that's easier on the arms than reading. We Have Ways of Making you Talk is an absolute goldmine on WWII.

    1. Nundanket,

I couldn’t sleep last night due to considerable discomfort, and doing fifteen minutes cleaning up some figures that I am going to renovate allowed me to think about something other than the pain … and when I returned to bed, I feel asleep almost at once.

I do listen to the occasional podcast, and your suggestion that I listen to ‘We Have Ways of Making You Talk’ is a good one.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Glad you are making some progress, even if it is in small steps. I have had a go with your 'Campaign' rules. I tried 2 Peninsula scenarios. One using 4 countries, Spain as Portugal and France, Prussia and Italy as Spain. I had French armies in each of the Spanish areas and the British marching up to join a Spanish army in the boarder lands, before the French can join up. Basically the Talavera campaign. Some random things happened but the French did join up to face the Anglo-Spanish army in about the right area. But it took 3 months of campaign time!! So I tried a smaller one using just France and Spain for something like the Corunna campaign. That also worked surprisingly well, so there is potential in your idea. All the best. Paul.

    1. PDL (Paul),

Thank you very much for the helpful feedback. You certainly went big on your first play-test, and the three month time scale I’d about what I would have expected for such a large campaign. My own projected campaign will only involve two countries (France and Prussia), and I hope to begin it within the next fortnight.

      All the best,

      Bob

You are so right! Wargaming and all it’s related bits and pieces has helped me by giving me something absorbing to think about other than my medical condition.

      All the best,

  8. I wondered if you could recommend a set (or sets or compendium) of your rules best suited to wars with the Zulu nation in the 19th century? I am familiar with some of your rules but I am thinking of what to recommend to a friend who is thinking of returning to Colonial Games and the Zulu wars of the mid to late 19th century? And best wishes with your health. Carl Luxford, North yorks.

    1. Carl,

My latest book (A Gallimaufry of Colonial Wargames) has several sets that might be of use to your friend, One set in particular might be of specific interest, as RESTLESS NATIVES contains a number of scenarios that are applicable to the Zulu War.

I hope that this is of help,

      Bob

PS. WHEN EMPIRES CLASH! might also be suitable and contains some simple Army Lists as well.

  9. Thank you Bob. All followed up. (Hopefully you got my paper letter that explained how followed up.) And looking forward to hearing my friends reaction. We live in nearby towns so its as much a 'postal' (paper and email) discussion as a face to face one. But your ideas have given us a good starting place for mutual discussion.

Thank you for your letter. It arrived on Saturday and I will be responding to it later this week as I’m currently a bit under the weather. I recently had a virus which I thought that I had got over … buy it seems to have come back with a vengeance. I’m determined to carry on as best I can, but it seems to have drained my reserves of physical and mental energy.

      Good luck spreading the word!

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. Bob, Sorry to hear you have been hit by further infection. Hope you can get some rest and help to combat the infection, while keeping some of your energy for you to regain your strength while not losing sense of purpose. Take care. Carl

Cheers! The medications I am on have some side effects that are similar to those of some common viruses, but this is making me feel definitely worse. Luckily, it isn’t COVID according to my recent Lateral Flow Tests.

Being retired means that I can - at least - fall asleep in my armchair without feeling guilty!

      All the best,

      Bob
