My Belle Époque project: A short update

The hot weather has rather slowed progress on my Belle Époque project. My toy/wargame room is on the top storey of our house, faces west, and has a flat, black roof. As a result, it gets hot as the day progresses, (in fact, it starts to get hot from about 10.00 am onwards) and unless I get up very early in the morning, I am restricted as to how much time I can spend in there, even with a tower fan going full blast!

I have, however, made some progress. The non-Hadendowa figures from my 15mm Mahdist army have now all been repainted where necessary and most of them have been varnished. The next step will be to glue them to their MDF bases, paint the edges of the bases matt black, and then the natural-coloured ground cork that I use to cover my bases can be applied.

I am hoping that this will be completed within a week or so, at which point I will post photographs of the two new completed armies as well as their respective backstories.

  1. BOB,
Certainly looking forward to viewing your photos of the newly completed 15mm armies. I understand you've been having heat wave conditions there in England- strange isn't it - while your sweltering it is freezing here with rain....roll on Summer. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I’ll certainly be featuring photos of these two new armies in a couple of blog posts as and when they are finished.

Over that last twenty-four hours, the UK has experienced the hottest day and night since records began … and it looks as if it will get hotter before it begins to cool down later this week.

Our nation’s infrastructure isn’t set up to cope with hot weather. The majority of public buildings, most forms of public transport, and our homes are not equipped with air conditioning. Many of our roads and airport runways are covered with tarmac, which melts in very hot weather, and our railways have rails that buckle when it gets too hot. I have a feeling that quite a few people would be very willing to swap our current weather for some freezing rain.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Just checks our outside sheds - wargames one is 100, the one we use as more of a summer house shed is 114!

    1. Rob Young,

I went to the hospital this morning, and when I got back to my car to drive home, the air temperature was 38C/100F … so I’m not surprised that your Summer House is well over that.

Can we expect heavy snow and freezing weather this Winter?

      Keep safe and keep cool,

      Bob

  3. I just saw this today and thought of you:
    https://www.tomsguide.com/opinion/i-just-beat-the-heat-with-a-dollar2-roll-of-aluminum-foil-heres-how
Tl;Dr Cover your windows with aluminum foil tp reflect the heat. I don't know if you're up for this task, but hey, it's worthy of consideration.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

Thanks for the suggestion. The weather is beginning to cool although we are told that we might get another heatwave later this month or early next month.

      All the best,

      Bob
