COVID ... five days on

This variant of COVID has proven to be the worst I have suffered from. Despite having had all my vaccinations, I have still been laid low by it since last Tuesday, although looking back I now realise that I was in the early stages of it on Monday or possibly even Sunday.

The worst now seems to be over, but I am still suffering from the symptoms of loss of appetite, a bunged up and runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, poor concentration, and a general feeling of debility. I can watch TV ... but I don't always remember what I've watched as I often doze off halfway through a programme and wake up again after the next one has started. Mind you, the latter might be more age-related than down to COVID!

I will be taking another lateral flow test later today to see if there is any sign of the virus's grip diminishing. In the meantime, the things that I wanted to do before Christmas – most especially to finish my model railway and to fight another ShamBattle/Portable Wargame – are on hold until I feel a lot better.

  1. Sorry to hear you're still laid low Bob. I've had a cold now for 3 weeks that I just can't quite shake off. It might be a touch of covid, as some of the symptoms are there, but then they are the same as the common cold, so hard to know. Lots of people round here suffering too. Fingers crossed you get over it soon.

    1. Steve J.,

Sorry to read that you’ve had a cold for the last three weeks. I suspect that you may well have had a dose of COVID along the way as I understand that the latest variant seems to have longish recovery period.

I’ve just taken a lateral flow test and I’m still positive, although the line is fainter than it was. I hope that I will feel well enough to go out tomorrow or by Monday at the latest.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hi BOB,
Good to hear that you believe that your over the worst of COVID- hopefully you'll make a full recovery in the next few days. I haven't had COVID yet- I've been Vaccinated six times which I believe has a lot to do with not being infected. On another matter- I've been waiting 22 days so far for the arrival of a 14th Doctor WHO figure from the UK...waiting on the post is driving me nuts and I'm in the frame of mind to vow never ordering anything from the UK ever again. Regards. KEV.

My recovery is slower than I would have hoped, but at least I am getting better.

You have done well to avoid catching COVID. I’m also fully vaccinated, but all that has done is to reduce the impact of the virus. If this current variant is anything to go by, if I hadn’t been vaccinated I would have been very ill indeed.

The post in the UK appears to be in a shambles. Ordinary letters can take days - or even weeks - to travel a couple of miles. On the same day I recently sent two books to separate addresses in the UK by First-class Tracked Parcel post, and one arrived three days after the other … and that had taken two days longer than the predicted next-day service! I hope that your figure arrives soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
Yes- postage back in the 1980s was between 7 and 9 days from the UK...now, it's 22 days plus. The worst I've had was 46 days postage from China- I won't be ordering anything from China. The best I've had was 9 days from the USA- most surprising. For the 14th Doctor WHO figure I've paid $80 for Express Mail- I don't think waiting 22 days + is anything like 'Express'. Cheers. KEV.

    3. Kev Robertson (Kev),

There are claims that the Royal Mail is concentrating its efforts on delivering packets and parcels rather than letters as it is more profitable. I tend to rely more on courier companies to deliver many of my larger parcels as they are more reliable than Royal Mail. I also tend to user the tracker option if it is available. I recently received a book that was late being delivered and was able to use the courier’s own tracking system to show them that they had had it in their depot for five days before delivering it.

      All the best,

      Bob

    4. A friend who did a spell as a postman a couple of years back told me that they were told to prioritise parcels. Recently I ordered tickets, paid for priority delivery and received them 10 days later - no post for days then 1/2 dozen envelopes arrived on the same day. Suspicious.

    5. Nundanket,

Your story sounds all too familiar. The particular problem I’ve had is with hospital appointment letters arriving AFTER the appointment. Luckily, most of the local hospitals have opted to use text messaging as well as written confirmation for most appointments.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Sorry to hear this dose of Covid has been so powerful. Possibly something to do with your immune system being low after your treatment?
I think I had Covid a couple of months back Lateral flow tests were negative). The symptoms weren't that bad for me (the headaches were BAD) but it took a long time to recover. I was sleeping lots and had to take a lot of time off work. Maybe if I'd just accepted it to start with I'd have recovered quicker.
Anyway, hope you get back up to strength soon.

Thank you for your best wishes.

I suspect that you are right. My immune system has been weakened by my treatment and it’s no great surprise that I’ve caught something.

I don’t think that Lateral Flow Tests are 100% reliable. My wife took one, and the ‘positive’ line was very, very faint … and yet her symptoms are nearly as bad as mine. I was pleased to read that you did recover, even if it took longer than you would have hoped.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Get well soon Bob - model railways can wait and they can distil slowly. Arguably a model railway is never finished ... a few tweaks here, a detail there ... it must be the Railway Modeller's equivalent of a Wargamer supposedly living a long life / for ever whilst he still has that last figure or lead mountain to paint.

    1. Mark, Man of TIN,

Many thanks for your best wishes.

I had hoped to have my model railway finished by Christmas, but I’ve accepted that it won’t be. I’d rather it took longer and I got it right than I rushed it and got it wrong.

I’ve read elsewhere that model railways are never finished … rather like most wargamer’s collections!

      All the best,

      Bob

  7. Best wishes for a swifter recovery, Bob…no fun feeling drab n grotty.
Parcels- I sold my mate’s collection (over three years) and used the local and convenient Evri drop off for most. Far quicker and cheaper than Royal Mail, and trackable. Only had ‘issues’ with a couple of items out of (around) 200…

    1. Martin S.,

Cheers! This is not the best time of year to feel grotty. I did, however, manage a short walk today, and although I had to have a doze when I got back home, the fresh air help to make me feel better.

I’ve also used Evri, and they’ve been most efficient. They have a pick-up point in an IT shop which is next door to our local Tesco (and it’s free car park!) … and during my last visit I discovered that they were diversifying into selling Games Workshop products, including paints!

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. Hello Bob, hope you are feeling better?
It may be a bit late but would your GP provide antiviral tablets to you for COVID? They may help people who are more at risk to recover ?

I’m feeling a lot better, but I’m still testing positive … so I still have to be careful.

Thanks for the suggestion. I need to see my GP, so I’ll mention anti-virals when I do.

      All the best,

I’m still testing positive and feel as if I now just have a very heavy cold. I’ve tried doing some modelling but things haven’t gone very well due to my currently poor concentration span. I have - however - been able to do a lot of thinking.

      All the best,

      Bob
