It wasn’t a cold … it was COVID!

As I mentioned in last Monday’s blog post, I was at The Grove Park Lodge No.2732 on Monday to see a Brother Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. It was my first Masonic meeting in months, and I was looking forward to going. I felt a bit rough before I went and slept like a log that night.

On Tuesday morning I was feeling worse, assumed that I had a cold, took some paracetamol, and carried on as best I could. However, by the middle of the afternoon. I was sneezing very frequently, had a runny nose, and began to shiver uncontrollably. Sue looked up my symptoms on the NHS website and immediately made me take a COVID test, which was positive. I am fully vaccinated and have had my cold and flu jabs, but I still caught it.

I’ve had COVID before, but this is the worst I’ve felt. I’m now in purdah for at least five days and until I have a negative test result. I seem to be sleeping or dozing almost all the time, so it looks as if all the things I planned to do this week will have to be put on hold. I’ll start blogging again as soon as I begin to feel better.

  1. BOB,
What rotten luck- hope you feel better and can get back to the things you enjoy in good time. Cheers. KEV.

This is something I could really do without in the run up to Christmas, but I’ve got to be careful as the effectiveness of my immune system is diminished by the cancer drugs I’m taking.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob, unfortunate! I think we have become complacent after the preventions we took previously.

I think that you might be right. All those precautions that we took when COVID was at its height seem to have gone by the board.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Ray Rousell,

It sometimes feels that my life seems to be a series on two steps forward, and then one step back. At least I have a good excuse for staying indoors and keeping warm .

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Get well soon! It seems as if Covid is here to stay and will be an annual event for all of us.

    1. Mark Cordone,

Cheers! I feel a bit better this afternoon than I did yesterday, and I hope that this improvement will continue tomorrow.

As you comment, COVID is now something that is endemic in the population like flu and the common cold and we are just going to have to live with it.

      All the best,

      Bob

To make matters worse, Sue is now showing signs of the same symptoms. It looks as if we’ll be ‘confined to barrack’ until early next week.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob -
I reckon it's being cold out is a pretty decent excuse for staying warm indoors. But what rotten luck! I hope something good your way comes soonish. I reckon it's about due!
    Get well soon,

Due to my compromised immune system (this is due to my ongoing daily dose of chemotherapy drugs) I have to exercise special care when I get infections.

I’m hoping that my life will take a turn for the better in 2024 … but I retain a certain amount of pessimism that it will.

      All the best,

      Bob

  7. Best wishes! I hope you and your wife get well soon, Bob!
I've known a number of people who have gotten covid more than once. I seem to have avoided it so far. There are some advantages to being an extreme introvert/hermit. ha!
(or is it a combination of good luck and paranoia... ha)

    1. Fitz-Badger,

This seems to be a particularly nasty variant we have caught. We are thankful that we are fully vaccinated and have had our pneumonia, flu, and cold jabs this year, otherwise it might have been far worse.

      All the best,

      Bob

  8. All the best (to you both) for a speedy recovery and no long-term effects. The immunisations are crucial when one is immune-compromised.

Cheers! This is the third or fourth time we’ve had COVID but it is by far and away the worst dose that either of us have suffered.

      All the best,

  9. Bad luck Bob, I hope you recover soon. We both caught covid (again) back in October and it took about two months to get over it. A nasty illness.

Cheers! Two months to get better! I hope not, as otherwise it will ruin our plans for Christmas and the New Year!

  10. Dear Bob, so sorry to hear that you got Covid on top of all the other stuff that you are dealing with. I have heard from some people that the latest strain is nasty i.e. more harsher symptoms than some other strains in past. Hope you have a speedy recovery and hope all your other treatments are going to plan.
    Best wishes Quinn

Thank you for your best wishes. You are absolutely right about the symptoms being the worst I’ve suffered from. We are just hoping that we’ll be better well before Christmas.

  11. Sorry to hear that, Bob, hope you are feeling better soon. Keep warm and take it easy. At least you had a good meeting with the Masons - I would assume you didn't pick up the virus there, anyway!

Cheers! Thanks for your best wishes.

The meeting went well and judging by the speed with which it hit me, I assume that I was already suffering from the earliest symptoms of COVID beforehand. I did let everyone who was there know, just in case someone caught it from me.

      All the best,

      Bob

  12. I hope you get well soon. I had a pretty big scare this summer with pneumonia and got vaccinated for everything as soon as I recovered, including the latest Covid booster.

    1. Chris,

As pneumonia is the most common cause of death amongst the elderly, when the opportunity arose, I had my pneumonia jab. I was pleased to read that you have recovered and then took the necessary steps to prevent a reoccurrence.

      All the best,

      Bob
